The city was also voted the best destination for solo travelers, highlighting its safety, in a list of 15 dream destinations where American travelers can get the most bang for their buck.

Many destinations around the world not only offer visitors unique experiences but also save them money at surprisingly low prices (in a positive way). Based on these criteria, the American travel magazine Travel and Leisure has compiled a list of the 15 international destinations where American tourists can save the most money:

Laos

Of course, trans- Pacific flights to Laos aren’t cheap. To save money, Americans fly into Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport during the off-season from May to October, when United Airlines and American Airlines typically operate direct flights from California starting around $700, then use a low-cost regional carrier to connect to Vientiane, Laos, or Luang Prabang. Once there, four-star hotel rooms can cost as little as $50 a night, and local meals can cost less than $5.

Toronto, Canada

Just north of the US border is a growing city with a diverse culture, food scene, and activities to suit a wide range of ages and interests. Toronto’s low season runs from October to March, except for December when the holidays increase demand. A direct flight from New York to Toronto takes less than 2 hours, and on budget airlines you can sometimes get tickets for as little as $100 round trip. Hotels are generally cheapest in January and February, when you can find 3-star rooms for under $100 a night.

Grand Est, France

The region formerly known as Alsace (now officially part of the larger Grand Est region) is a favorite among French travelers. Fly to Strasbourg, France, the capital of Grand Est, in February or March for the best prices. Round-trip flights from New York can be found for under $700, and you can stay in a three-star hotel for as little as $89 a night in the off-season.

Kenya

A holiday in Africa can seem far-fetched for budget travelers. But the key to saving money is to travel during the off-season, from late November to March. This time of year offers both good prices – flights from the US to Nairobi typically cost around $1,000 – and warm, dry weather.

Brisbane, Australia

Australia doesn't quite fit the American "budget travel" mold, with flights to the continent often costing at least $1,000. However, compared to other Australian destinations, the riverside city of Brisbane is one of the more affordable entry points. Book your trip between April and August to take advantage of the city's low season, when you can find three-star accommodations for under $100 a night.

Panama City, Panama

Although Panama is in the Northern Hemisphere, it only has two seasons, the opposite of North America. “Winter” (or rainy season) lasts from about May to December, and “summer” (dry season) lasts from December to May. Going during the rainy season is cheaper, when the climate is not ideal but not unappealing, and importantly, the prices are affordable.

Hanoi, Vietnam

Visitors will have it all on a trip to Hanoi: vibrant culture, millennia of history, a culinary scene that ranges from world-famous street carts to Michelin-starred restaurants. There are even primeval forests on the outskirts that seem to creep into the city. With US$1 converting to around 25,000 Vietnamese Dong – roughly the price of a good banh mi – you’ll find it easy to stick to your budget and still live comfortably in Vietnam’s bustling capital.

The remaining destinations on the list include: Albania, Donegal, Ireland; Saint Vincent and the Grenadines; Etyek, Hungary; Tunisia; Madeira, Portugal; Armenia.
