
On July 23, the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) took place in the capital Vientiane to review and complete all preparations for the 57th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM-57) and related meetings.
Deputy Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet, Head of Vietnam's ASEAN SOM, led the Vietnamese delegation to the meeting.
At the meeting, the ASEAN SOM Heads expressed their deepest condolences to the Government and people of Vietnam on the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on July 19, 2024. On behalf of the Vietnamese delegation, Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet expressed his sincere thanks for the countries' sharing and sympathy at this sad moment.
Emphasizing that the 57th AMM and related conferences are the most important series of activities of the year for ASEAN Foreign Ministers, the countries highly appreciated the thoughtful and comprehensive preparations of the Chair country Laos, affirmed their support and close coordination in the spirit of solidarity and cooperation, contributing to the overall success of the conferences.
With the theme “ASEAN: Promoting Connectivity and Resilience”, ASEAN Foreign Ministers and partners will discuss the implementation of ASEAN's priorities in 2024, the process of building the ASEAN Community, review and orient cooperation between ASEAN and partners, and discuss the international and regional situation. The conferences will adopt many important documents as a basis for implementing cooperation between ASEAN and its partners in the coming time.
According to the program, the 57th AMM and related conferences will take place from July 24-27 at the Lao National Convention Center in the capital Vientiane, including about 20 activities within the frameworks of ASEAN, ASEAN+1, ASEAN+3, East Asia Summit (EAS) and ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).
Also on July 23, Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet and the heads of ASEAN SOM countries attended the meeting of the Executive Board of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ), discussing the implementation of the SEANWFZ Action Plan for the 2023-2027 period and improving the effectiveness of cooperation in the coming time.
