As part of the National Disaster Prevention and Control Week 2026, from May 13-16, the Department of Dike Management and Disaster Prevention and Control, in coordination with relevant agencies and units, organized a series of activities in Thai Nguyen province.
Integrating disaster prevention knowledge into schools.
At Bac Kan Secondary School in Bac Kan ward, the final round of the " Together with you to prevent natural disasters - Building a sustainable future " quiz competition was held with the participation of students from grades 6 to 8 from three schools: Bac Kan Secondary School, Huyen Tung Secondary School, and Duc Xuan Secondary School.
The competition was organized by the Department of Dike Management and Disaster Prevention and Control in coordination with the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Thai Nguyen province, the Department of Education and Training of Thai Nguyen province, the People's Committee of Bac Kan ward and Duc Xuan ward.

Cultural performances to welcome the "Golden Bell Challenge" competition "Together with you to prevent and mitigate natural disasters - Building a sustainable future" in conjunction with the National Week for Disaster Prevention and Control in 2026.
Through direct question-and-answer sessions, content on disaster prevention and response is conveyed more effectively to students. From recognizing risks and responding to disaster situations to developing self-protection and community support awareness, knowledge is no longer confined to textbooks but enters the school environment in a lively and memorable way.
This is also the overarching goal of the competition. Beyond simply disseminating knowledge, the program aims to develop proactive response skills in children and teenagers; create a healthy and enriching learning environment; and enhance the attention of the government, schools, and society to disaster prevention and response in schools.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tien, Deputy Director of the Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention and Control
Speaking at the final round, Mr. Nguyen Van Tien, Deputy Director of the Department of Dike Management and Disaster Prevention and Control, stated that disaster prevention and control requires close attention and guidance from all levels and sectors, as well as the joint efforts of the entire society. Raising awareness of disaster risks among the people, including students – the future leaders of the country – is essential and must be carried out regularly and consistently, aiming for the goal of "For a society safe from natural disasters."
In reality, children are a group that needs to be equipped with knowledge and skills early on. When properly introduced, they not only know how to protect themselves in dangerous situations, but can also become "bridges" to spread information on disaster prevention and response to their families and communities.
Following the success of the past four years, the "Golden Bell Challenge : Together We Prevent and Mitigate Natural Disasters " continues to contribute to promoting communication and raising awareness about disaster prevention and mitigation among children, the community, and society as a whole. This activity also promotes the integration of disaster prevention and mitigation content into school curricula; and mobilizes the participation of businesses, international organizations, and non- governmental organizations to work together to build a safer living environment against natural disasters.
This is also one of the contents related to the objectives of the Project "Enhancing community awareness and community-based disaster risk management, by 2030" , approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 553/QD-TTg dated April 6, 2021.
From student drawings to a sense of community protection.
Along with the "Golden Bell" quiz competition, the " Perspectives on Natural Disasters " painting competition creates another accessible and age-appropriate form of awareness-raising for students. While the "Golden Bell" competition helps students access knowledge through questions and scenarios, the painting competition encourages students to express their understanding of natural disasters through their own observations and feelings.
After more than two weeks since its launch, the competition attracted 11,144 students aged 6 to 10 from 11 primary schools in Phan Dinh Phung ward. The large number of entries shows that the topic of disaster prevention and mitigation has received clear attention from students and schools.

The paintings are titled "Perspectives on Natural Disasters".

The artworks focus on identifying signs of natural disasters, their consequences, prevention and response measures, and the dream of a safe and resilient society against risks. Some paintings use bright colors, conveying a desire for a peaceful life. Others directly depict the ferocity of natural disasters and the lessons that need to be remembered.
More than just an artistic activity, the competition is also a form of practical education. Through each drawing, students are encouraged to observe, think, and express their awareness of natural disasters, thereby developing a sense of responsibility towards themselves, their families, and their communities.
Disaster prevention and response communication in schools is being implemented in ways that are more relevant to students' age groups. Knowledge is being incorporated into competitions, drawings, and experiences suitable for children's psychology, instead of just one-sided propaganda sessions.
When awareness is formed early and skills are regularly practiced, students will have a stronger foundation to remain calmer in the face of risks, know how to protect themselves, and be more responsible to the community. This is also the long-term significance of integrating disaster prevention and response into the school environment: not only helping students better understand today's natural disasters, but also contributing to preparing a more proactive and resilient generation for future challenges.
