Vietnam - India Textile Workshop: Laying the foundation for substantive and sustainable development of bilateral textile and garment cooperation

On May 23, 2025, the Vietnam Trade Office in India organized an online seminar with the theme "Vietnam - India Cooperation in the Textile and Garment Industry", attracting the participation of nearly 100 businesses, associations and experts from the two countries.

This is the second Webinar in a series of trade promotion activities implemented by the Trade Office in 2025, aiming to concretize the direction of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the Ministry of Industry and Trade on market diversification, removing difficulties for businesses, promoting investment - trade connections, aiming for a bilateral turnover target of 20 billion USD.

In his opening speech, Mr. Bui Trung Thuong, Commercial Counselor, Vietnam Trade Office in India, emphasized that Vietnam is one of the three largest textile and garment exporting countries in the world , with a turnover of 43.57 billion USD in 2024, an increase of 10.18% compared to 2023. The textile and garment industry creates jobs for more than 3 million direct and indirect workers. However, the proportion of textile and garment raw material imports from China accounts for nearly 60%, creating an urgent need to expand supply sources. Mr. Thuong commented that India, with its outstanding advantages in cotton, yarn and textile machinery and equipment production, is an important strategic partner to help Vietnam reduce dependence and save input costs by 22-27% through incentives within the framework of the ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement (AIFTA). On the other hand, Vietnam is fully capable of meeting India's growing demand for high-quality polyester fabrics and synthetic fibers, estimated at up to 1.2 billion USD/year.

Mr. Truong Van Cam, Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS), highly appreciated the potential for cooperation between the two countries, while saying that the current cooperation is still not commensurate with the scale and position of the two sides. He called on businesses to strengthen connections, exchange technology and promote green production, towards a sustainable development of the bilateral supply chain.

Mr. Shri Rakesh Mehra, Chairman, Textile Council of India -CITI

From the Indian side, Mr. Shri Rakesh Mehra, Chairman of the Council of Textiles and Apparel of India (CITI), shared: the country's textile and apparel industry is worth 170 billion USD, with exports reaching 37 billion USD in 2024, with a closed value chain from yarn to finished products. Vietnam is an ideal partner to coordinate the development of a more flexible and high-value supply chain in the context of the global supply chain being strongly restructured after the pandemic and trade conflicts.

Mr. Rajesh Bhagat, Chairman, Worldex India

Mr. Rajesh Bhagat, Chairman of Worldex India, recommended that businesses of both countries increase their presence at specialized fairs to build direct bridges, promote contract signing and expand cooperation in the fields of machinery, technology and supply chain.

Representing the silk industry, Mr. Tran Ba ​​Phuoc Anh - General Secretary of the Vietnam Sericulture Association - introduced Vietnam's ability to supply high-quality silk and the potential to build a silk value chain with India - a country with a diverse silk industry ecosystem, from weaving, dyeing to finishing products.

In the sharing from the enterprise, Mr. Luu Tien Chung - General Director of LGG Bac Giang Garment Joint Stock Company - introduced the investment strategy and operations of the enterprise in the Indian market, emphasizing that India is a potential destination not only in the export sector but also a strategic investment and production place.

The discussion session was lively and attracted the active participation of all businesses from both countries. Delegates asked many questions and discussed in depth the potential for cooperation, focusing on practical issues such as responding to risks from US tax policies, expanding markets, strengthening supply chain connectivity and promoting technology sharing in the textile and garment industry.

The Vietnam-India Textile and Garment Conference organized by the Vietnam Trade Office in India ended successfully, not only providing updated and comprehensive information on the current situation of the industry, but also clearly orienting bilateral cooperation in the coming time. The event has contributed significantly to laying the foundation for a strategic, substantive and sustainable partnership between the two regional textile and garment powers - Vietnam and India, especially in the context of the global supply chain being deeply restructured. The Vietnam Trade Office in India continues to affirm its role as an active, proactive and creative bridge in promoting trade and investment between Vietnam and India.
