The Tien Dong uprising, initiated by Nguyen Quang Bich, was the premise for Ton That Thuyet to launch an attack in Hue and the great Can Vuong movement to save the country. General Nguyen Quang Bich was born in 1832 in Trinh Pho village, now An Ninh commune, Tien Hai district, Thai Binh province. In 1869, he passed the Ky Ty examination with the title of Dinh Nguyen Hoang Giap. He was appointed by the Nguyen Dynasty as an official with the position of Te Tuu Quoc Tu Giam, then as Hung Hoa Governor.
Overview of the workshop
In 1884, the Nguyen Dynasty signed the Harmand and Patenotre treaties, and our country was under the protection of France. The court ordered Nguyen Quang Bich to return to the capital to take up a new position, but he defied the order, returned the seal, and was determined to defend Hung Hoa citadel. Because the enemy force was too strong, he and his soldiers broke the siege, led the army to Tien Dong (Tien Luong commune, Cam Khe district) and launched an uprising. The Tien Dong uprising caused many losses to the enemy, and at the same time, created more confidence for the war faction in the Hue Court and King Ham Nghi issued the Can Vuong edict. He was appointed as Deputy Grand Scholar, Minister of Rites, and Minister of Military Affairs of the Northern Region. After that, he planned to expand the uprising from Tien Dong to Nghia Lo, established a resistance court, and welcomed King Ham Nghi to the North. The uprising ultimately failed, but left behind glorious pages in the history of the resistance war against the French in the late 19th century.
Speaking at the workshop, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ho Dai Dung emphasized: The National Scientific Workshop "Tien Dong Uprising and Restoration and Embellishment of Historical Relics" has affirmed and clarified more about Tien Dong Uprising, correctly assessed the role and position of the uprising in the Can Vuong Movement against French colonialism and the life and career of General Nguyen Quang Bich. In particular, it creates more scientific basis to promote recommendations to central ministries and branches to continue investing, renovating, embellishing and promoting the value of the relic so that Tien Dong Base Relic becomes more and more spacious, worthy of a relic that is both cultural and historical and of national scientific significance; so that the relic is truly a spiritual tourism destination for the people and visitors from all directions, actively contributing to the task of economic, cultural and social development in Cam Khe district in the coming time".
