Nearly 5 billion people, equivalent to more than 60% of the world's population, are active on social media. This information was released by the digital consulting firm Kepios in its quarterly report published on July 20th.
According to Kepios, the number of social media users has increased by 3.7% in the past year. However, there are disparities in usage rates between regions. In East and Central Africa, the percentage of active users is 9%, while in India – currently the world's most populous country – the usage rate is 33%.
The Kepios report also shows that the amount of time spent on social media has increased by 2 minutes per day over the past year, reaching 2 hours and 26 minutes. There are significant differences between countries in terms of social media usage time. Specifically, Brazilians spend an average of 3 hours and 49 minutes on social media each day, while the figure in Japan is less than 1 hour.
According to the Kepios report, social media users are primarily concentrated on seven platforms. Meta has three popular apps: WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, while China has three apps: WeChat, TikTok, and the local version of Douyin. Twitter, Messenger, and Telegram are the world's leading social media platforms.
