Honda has long been known for making durable engines. However, a new lawsuit in the US suggests that some of the company's recent 1.5L and 2.0L 4-cylinder engines may have serious problems.
Specifically, the lawsuit alleges that these engines have difficulty withstanding high compression pressures and high temperatures, leading to overheating, cylinder head gasket failure, and other costly problems.

One of the main allegations is that the cylinder head gaskets in Honda’s four-cylinder engines are prone to cracking. If that happens, coolant can collect in the grooves of the cylinder head. The lack of coolant can cause the engine to overheat, seize, or, in extreme cases, catch fire, according to the lawsuit. Owners also reported white smoke coming from the exhaust, a sign that coolant was leaking into the pistons and burning up.
Another concern is that coolant mixed with engine oil can cause corrosion of internal components. The plaintiffs allege that Honda has refused to repair or replace affected i-VTEC engines, even when the vehicles are still under warranty.

According to the class action lawsuit, engines like these are typically expected to operate reliably for at least 200,000 miles (about 320,000 km), but in this case, their lifespan will be significantly shortened.
The five vehicles covered in the class action lawsuit include the 2018-2022 Honda Accord, 2016-2022 Honda Civic, 2017-2022 Honda CR-V, 2021-2022 Acura RDX, and 2019-2022 Acura TLX. Six plaintiffs are named in the lawsuit, five of whom owned a 2018 or 2019 Honda Accord, and one who owned a 2018 Honda CR-V Touring.

The plaintiffs are suing Honda for breach of warranty, racketeering, and violations of numerous consumer protection laws. In addition to seeking a jury trial, they are seeking compensatory damages, court costs, and expenses.
This isn’t the first time Honda’s 1.5L i-VTEC engine has been the subject of a class action lawsuit. In late 2024, a lawsuit filed in California alleged that the engine had inadequate sealing and cooling, which allowed coolant to leak into the engine, contaminating the oil, causing overheating and loss of power.
