Some speculation suggests that Honda is considering developing more high-performance versions of this coupe, including the Prelude Type S in 2026 and the Prelude Type R in 2027. The new Honda Prelude is positioned as a hybrid sports coupe, inheriting the spirit of the Civic but with a lower, longer and sportier design. According to the simulation image, the Prelude Type R version will be strongly upgraded in aerodynamic design, including extended wheel arches, separate sports rims, larger side skirts and a redesigned front bumper with enlarged air intakes.
The car is developed on an improved technical platform with the aim of targeting customers who are passionate about driving. The rear of the car can be equipped with an aerodynamic diffuser and a large GT-style spoiler. Inside the cabin is expected to have a sporty style with racing seats, red trim details, and a digital dashboard interface specific to the Type R. Powering the Prelude Type R could be a new generation e:HEV hybrid powertrain.
The configuration includes a turbocharged gasoline engine combined with two electric motors for a total output of more than 300 horsepower, equivalent to the current Civic Type R (325 horsepower). The use of a hybrid powertrain not only helps meet increasingly strict emission standards but also reorients Honda's approach to sports cars in the electrification era. One important change is that the new Prelude will not use a traditional manual transmission. Instead, Honda will equip the “S+ Shift” mode, which simulates the feeling of shifting gears with engine sound, torque changes and paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. This system is expected to be further refined on the Prelude Type R version, to bring the most authentic and exciting driving experience in the absence of a mechanical transmission. Honda is also said to be tweaking the chassis for the Prelude Type R, including a lowered suspension, a wider wheelbase, body reinforcements, and upgraded brakes. The goal is to improve steering response, stability, and a sportier driving feel.
Honda has not confirmed plans for high-performance Preludes at this time, with some dealers in Japan saying they have not received any information about a Type S or Type R, at least not before 2026. However, with the standard Prelude due for release in late 2025, it is likely that sporty versions will be revealed in the near future.
