Ambassador Pham Quang Hieu said that the defense cooperation between Vietnam and Japan has continuously expanded, deepened, and become a bright spot and important pillar in the relationship between the two countries.
On November 27, in Tokyo, the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan solemnly held a ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army (December 22, 1944 - December 22, 2024) and the 35th anniversary of Vietnam National Defense Day.
Attending the ceremony were Defense Minister Nakatani Gen; Chief of the Joint Staff, Japan Self-Defense Forces, General Yoshida Yoshihide; Deputy Chief of the Air Self-Defense Force, Lieutenant General Ogasawara Takuto; Director of the Ground Equipment Bureau, Acquisition, Materiel and Training Agency (ATLA), Lieutenant General Ohashi Satoru; Vice President of the Joint Command and Staff College, Vice Admiral Tsukagoshi Yasunori; President of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Mr. Atsushi Sunami; Ambassadors, Defense Attaches, Military Attaches of countries and representatives of the Vietnamese community in Japan.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Pham Quang Hieu reviewed the glorious 80-year history of the Vietnam People's Army.
The Ambassador emphasized that after 80 years of establishment and development, the Vietnam People's Army has promoted the heroic historical tradition of thousands of years of building and defending the country; actively contributing to building a peaceful and stable environment in the region and the world .
The Ambassador stated that international integration and defense diplomacy have achieved many important breakthroughs, creating favorable conditions and an international environment for national construction and defense.
The Ambassador said that Vietnam has had defense relations with more than 100 countries and has participated in the United Nations peacekeeping force since 2014.
Referring to Vietnam-Japan defense cooperation, Ambassador Pham Quang Hieu said that on the basis of the strong development of Vietnam-Japan friendship, defense cooperation between Vietnam and Japan has continuously expanded, deepened, and become a bright spot and important pillar in the relationship between the two countries.
Exchanges and delegations at all levels are increasingly close, with the Japanese Minister of Defense officially visiting Vietnam in August 2024.
The two countries maintain cooperation mechanisms such as the Defense Policy Dialogue at the deputy ministerial level, consultations with staff officers of the three military services of the Navy, Army and Air Force; signing many cooperation documents; enhancing cooperation to improve capacity in many areas such as overcoming the consequences of war; training; military medicine; search and rescue; United Nations peacekeeping; cooperation within the framework of the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM+)...
Ambassador Pham Quang Hieu said that the two countries' upgrading of their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has created a new impetus to promote multifaceted cooperation, including defense relations between the two countries.
The Ambassador expressed his belief that Vietnam-Japan defense cooperation will continue to be raised to a new level, for the benefit of the two countries, for peace and prosperity in the region and the world.
Vietnam's Defense Attaché in Japan, Colonel Nguyen Thai Son, affirmed that after 80 years of building, fighting and growing, the Vietnam People's Army has continuously grown and developed, always demonstrating the mettle of a revolutionary army, born from the people, fighting for the people, worthy of being an absolutely loyal and trustworthy fighting force of the Party, State and People of Vietnam.
Colonel Nguyen Thai Son emphasized that defense diplomacy has become one of the pillars of the Party's foreign affairs and State diplomacy , an important channel to create and strengthen strategic trust, build and develop Vietnam's friendly relations with other countries and international organizations, contributing to enhancing the position and prestige of the country, people and the Vietnam People's Army.
Colonel Nguyen Thai Son affirmed that defense cooperation is an indispensable pillar and a driving force for the overall Vietnam-Japan relationship. In April 2018, the two countries signed the Joint Vision Statement on Bilateral Defense Cooperation towards the Next Decade. This is an important legal basis for the two countries to strengthen and expand defense cooperation in many areas. On that basis, the two sides regularly exchange delegations at all levels, conduct annual Defense Policy Dialogues at the deputy ministerial level, participate in United Nations peacekeeping operations and cooperate closely in multilateral forums, especially within the framework of (ADMM+).
According to Colonel Nguyen Thai Son, at the talks between the two Defense Ministers during Defense Minister Kihara Minoru's visit to Vietnam in August 2024, the two sides highly appreciated and agreed to continue to effectively maintain existing bilateral defense cooperation mechanisms.
Speaking at the ceremony, Defense Minister Nakatani Gen expressed his admiration for the Vietnamese army.
Mr. Nakatani Gen reviewed the stages of coordinating work with the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense in various positions in the Ministry of National Defense.
Mr. Nakatani Gen said at the bilateral Defense Ministers' Meeting held in August 2024, both Ministers wished to further promote bilateral defense cooperation in many areas.
He emphasized that the origin of Vietnam-Japan defense cooperation is based on trust built between partners through face-to-face meetings and expressed hope that the two countries will continue to build new trust./.
