A spokesman for the federal prosecutor's office in Belgium, where the European Parliament is based, confirmed an investigation into allegations of corruption, counterfeiting and money laundering involving the European Parliament, with several officials arrested and questioned. Huawei is said to be on a list of companies suspected of bribing officials.
Huawei accused of bribing officials with 'excessive gifts and food'
Police have carried out searches in Belgium and Portugal and sealed off two European Parliament offices linked to the accused officials. "These crimes are believed to have been committed by a criminal organisation to promote private commercial interests in the context of political issues," the spokesman said.
Huawei affirms its readiness to cooperate with the investigation
The Belgian prosecutor's office also said the alleged corruption had been ongoing and covert since 2021, under the guise of commercial lobbying. Forms of corruption included compensation for political positions, excessive gifts such as meals and travel expenses, and invitations to sports matches.
No MEPs have been charged so far, but at least 15 current and former MEPs are under investigation. A spokesman for the European Parliament said the body had received a request from Belgian authorities to cooperate with the investigation and would promptly comply with the request.
Huawei said it takes the allegations “seriously” and will “urgently engage in investigations” to clarify the matter. A company spokesperson said: “Huawei has a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and is committed to complying with all applicable laws and regulations.”
