According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to integrate a new modem, developed in-house, into a product set to launch in 2027, the iPad Pro M6.
Specifically, Gurman stated that a next-generation iPad Pro with the M6 chip will "leap forward" to using Apple's own modem. This means Apple will replace the Qualcomm modems currently used in iPad Pro versions with cellular connectivity.
"The company has also begun early research on M6 versions with its own modem chip, expected to launch in 2027," Gurman quoted.
Although information about the iPad Pro M6 has surfaced in rumors, this is not actually the next iPad Pro model. According to Gurman, Apple is developing an iPad Pro M5 and expects to launch it this coming October.
First appearing on the iPhone 16e, Apple's own C1 5G modem is considered more energy-efficient than Qualcomm's modem, allowing for a thinner device. However, the chip does not yet support the high-speed mmWave 5G band.
Writing in The Verge , author Allison Johnson emphasizes that Apple overcame many challenges to perfect the C1 chip. After her experience, she believes she didn't notice much difference in speed between devices using the C1 chip (iPhone 16e) and the Snapdragon X71 (iPhone 16).
Apple itself acknowledges that C1 is just the beginning. The company says it will integrate its self-developed 5G modem into many other devices in the future. Based on rumors, these include the iPad 11, iPhone 17 Air, Mac computers, and the next generation of Vision Pro glasses.
