Along with the announcement of iOS 26 during the keynote at its annual WWDC 2025 event, Apple confirmed that it would discontinue support for three iPhone models: the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. All three devices were released in September 2018. iOS 26 can only be installed on iPhone 11 (released in 2019) and later.
Even though the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR don’t support iOS 26, they will continue to receive software updates from Apple. For example, on April 1, Apple released iOS 16.7.11 with security patches for the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.
With newer iPhone models that support iOS 26, not all of them will get all the features of the latest operating system version. Apple Intelligence, with many improvements in translation features or AI models, is only supported from the iPhone 15 Pro line onwards.
As rumored, Apple has decided to number its operating systems by year instead of release order. No more iOS 19, the next software version for iPhone is called iOS 26.
With the Liquid Glass design language, familiar interface elements from iOS 26 are renewed. On the lock screen, the clock can change size according to the subject. The Camera app has a more logical and simpler layout, while the address bar and navigation buttons in Safari have an effect of floating off the screen.
The Phone app on iOS 26 has a number of improvements, including a mode to combine favorite contacts, call history and voicemail on the same screen, a feature to answer or listen to calls on the user's behalf when busy, called Hold Assist and Call Screening.
The messaging app adds a background-editing feature. Users can choose from stock photos, take selfies, or create images using AI. Group chats get a polling tool and notifications when members are typing messages.
