Along with announcing iOS 26 through a keynote speech at the annual WWDC 2025 event, Apple confirmed it will end support for three iPhone models: iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. All three devices were launched in September 2018. iOS 26 can only be installed on iPhone 11 models (released in 2019) and later.
Even though the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR are not supported by iOS 26, they will still continue to receive software updates from Apple. For example, on April 1st, Apple released iOS 16.7.11 with security patches for the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.
With newer iPhone models supporting iOS 26, not all devices receive all the features of the latest operating system version. Apple Intelligence, with many improvements to translation features and AI models, is only supported from the iPhone 15 Pro onwards.
As expected, Apple has decided to number its operating systems by year instead of release order. There is no longer iOS 19; the next software version for the iPhone is called iOS 26.
With the Liquid Glass design language, familiar interface elements from iOS 26 have been revamped. On the lock screen, the clock can resize to fit the subject. The Camera app has a more streamlined and simpler layout, while the address bar and navigation buttons in Safari have a floating effect.
The Phone app on iOS 26 has several improvements, including a feature that combines favorite contacts, call history, and voicemail into a single screen, and a feature called Hold Assist that answers or takes calls on behalf of the user when busy, as well as Call Screening.
The messaging app adds a background image customization feature. Users can choose from existing photos, take their own photos, or create images using AI. Group chats now include a polling tool and notifications for members who are typing messages.
