In a post on social media X on the morning of October 2, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said: "Our actions end unless the Israeli regime decides to retaliate further. In that scenario, our response will be stronger and more decisive."

The October 1 airstrike was Iran's largest military attack on Israel, about twice the size of Iran's attack on Israel in April. Israeli officials said Israel would carry out "significant retaliation" in the coming days, possibly targeting oil production facilities inside Iran and other strategic locations.

Despite calls for a ceasefire from the United Nations, the United States and the European Union, fighting between Israel and Hezbollah forces in Lebanon continued on October 2.

The Israeli military says regular infantry and armored units are taking part in ground operations in southern Lebanon against Hezbollah forces.

The addition of infantry and armored troops suggests the operation has moved beyond limited commando raids. The military said the ground campaign is primarily aimed at destroying tunnels and other infrastructure on the border, with no plans to expand operations into Beirut or major cities in southern Lebanon.

Israel, however, continued to bomb Beirut's southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold, with at least a dozen airstrikes hitting targets believed to belong to the group. Large plumes of smoke rose from some suburbs. Israel issued new evacuation orders for the area, which had been largely deserted after days of heavy airstrikes.

Iran said its attack on Israel on October 1 targeted only military facilities. Iran's state news agency said three Israeli military bases were targeted. Iran said its attack was in response to Israel's killing of its and Hezbollah leaders, as well as Israel's actions in Lebanon and Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to respond. “Iran made a big mistake tonight, and they will pay the price,” he said at the start of an emergency political security cabinet meeting late on October 1.
