>>> Readers are invited to watch the video released by the IDF showing the airstrike that killed Hezbollah military leader Ali Tabatabai in Beirut
According to Axios, this is the first Israeli airstrike on Beirut in five months. The November 23 attack comes as Israeli airstrikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon have escalated in recent weeks, as Israel believes Hezbollah is trying to rearm and rebuild its military capabilities in Lebanon.
Israeli missiles hit the fourth and fifth floors of a 10-story building in a southern suburb of Beirut, considered a Hezbollah stronghold. The airstrike killed five people and wounded more than 20 others, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry .
Hours after the attack, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released an official statement announcing that they had "eliminated" Tabatabai.

"Tabatabai commands most of Hezbollah's units and has made every effort to restore combat readiness against Israel. The IDF will act against Hezbollah's attempts to rebuild and rearm and will act firmly to eliminate any threats against Israel," the IDF said in a statement.
The Israeli military added that the IDF remains committed to implementing the agreements reached between Israel and Lebanon.
A senior US official told Axios that Israel did not notify the US in advance of the Beirut airstrike. "We were notified shortly after the strike took place," the official said.
Israeli officials added that Tabatabai was Hezbollah's No. 2 figure after political leader Naeem Qassem. Tabatabai was appointed Hezbollah's military leader after his predecessors were assassinated.
