Israel strikes 200 targets in Gaza after ceasefire ends

VnExpressVnExpress01/12/2023

The Israeli military said it struck more than 200 targets in the Gaza Strip after a ceasefire with Hamas expired and fighting resumed.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on December 1 that its divisions had launched several new attacks in the Gaza Strip. Israeli infantry destroyed many mined structures, tunnels, rocket sites and other facilities belonging to Hamas.

According to the IDF, the Israeli Air Force, in coordination with infantry divisions, attacked more than 200 targets in the Gaza Strip. Israeli naval missile boats, tanks and artillery also participated in the raids after the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas ended.

Gaza health officials say 109 people have been killed and hundreds injured in the renewed fighting. In total, around 15,000 people have been killed and at least 36,000 injured in Gaza since the conflict began in October.

The IDF recorded several rocket attacks from southern Lebanon targeting its outposts on the same day, and the Israeli army responded by firing artillery at the firing positions. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attacks on Israeli outposts.

The fighting between Israel and Hamas has entered its eighth week following an attack by the militant group on October 7. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that when the fighting resumes, Israel will have to achieve the goals of "rescuing hostages, eliminating Hamas" and ensuring that civilians are not threatened by attacks from the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on November 30 called on Israel to "minimize casualties to innocent Palestinian civilians, including clearly and precisely designating areas out of range of fire to ensure their safety."

Some sources said that although the Israeli army announced the resumption of fighting in the Gaza Strip, negotiations on the possibility of extending the ceasefire were still being promoted by the two mediators, Qatar and Egypt.

During the week-long ceasefire, a total of 105 hostages were released by Hamas from the Gaza Strip, in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners being released from Israeli prisons.
