"The Road to Dien Bien" through works

These days, the exhibition space “Road to Dien Bien” at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum (66 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi ) regularly welcomes visitors. With traditional display methods, combined with cinemagraph projection technology and interactive experience space, the exhibition brings viewers back to the moments of the Dien Bien Phu battlefield in the past.

Those are the moments when soldiers pull artillery into the battlefield, preparing for the campaign, shown through the works "Pulling artillery", "To Vinh Dien inserting artillery" by artist Duong Huong Minh, or the work "Pulling artillery Dien Bien" by artist Tran Dinh Tho. Those are the moments of support and contribution of tens of thousands of laborers, clearly depicted through the works "Viet Bac" by artist Dao Duc, "Seeing each other off to the laborers" by artist Luu Van Sin, "The whole country goes to battle" by artist Luu Danh Thanh. That is also the close-knit sentiment between the army and the people, supporting each other during wartime, shown by artists through the works "Love of the army and the people" by artist Nguyen Sang, "The road to Dien Bien" by artist Tran Khanh Chuong...

Many works deeply depict and vividly recreate heroic and glorious battles on the battlefield, such as: "Attack on the center of Dien Bien Phu" by author Nguyen The Vi, "Dien Bien that year" by author Cao Trong Thiem...

In particular, the exhibition also displays classic works about the heroic fighting spirit of our army and people, such as: "Joining the Party in Dien Bien Phu" by author Nguyen Sang, "Be Van Dan takes his body as a gun mount" by author Le Vinh, or a series of sketches of the Dien Bien Phu battlefield by artist To Ngoc Van before his death... All the works have brought to the public impressive moments about the Dien Bien Phu battlefield in the past, about the hardships and sacrifices our ancestors went through to create a glorious Dien Bien Phu Victory.

Sharing about the work "The whole country goes to battle" - his brainchild being displayed at the exhibition, sculptor Luu Danh Thanh said that on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (2004), he followed the delegation of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association to work in Dien Bien. During that trip, he was able to visit the old battlefield relics, visit the Dien Bien museum, listen to many stories related to the Dien Bien Phu Campaign... Among them, he was impressed and delighted with the image of the cart and determined to create a work about that unique image.

Stopping in front of the work "Party Admission in Dien Bien Phu" by artist Nguyen Sang, Ms. Phuong Ha (Long Bien district) said that she had read and known that the work had been recognized by the State as a National Treasure, so she was very impressed with this work.

According to the Chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, Luong Xuan Doan, the work "Party Admission in Dien Bien Phu" by artist Nguyen Sang is the greatest and most successful work of socialist realism art in Vietnam in the previous decades of the last century. In the work, there is an image of a wounded soldier and the Party cell of the unit holding a ceremony to admit the wounded soldier to the Party right at the wall of the trench.

“I think that up to today, through the resistance wars against France and America, no work has surpassed this work by the famous painter Nguyen Sang. That shows that the heart and soul of the artist always turns towards the great things of the country and the people,” painter Luong Xuan Doan shared.

Ms. Nguyen Minh Tam, from Thanh Xuan district, shared that she was very impressed with the fine art works about Dien Bien Phu displayed at the exhibition. Especially the image of Hero To Vinh Dien using his body to block the cannon in the work of artist Duong Huong Minh, or the image of Be Van Dan using his body as a gun mount... left a deep impression on her.

According to artist Luong Xuan Doan, the images captured by artist Duong Huong Minh of the moment Hero To Vinh Dien used his body to block the cannon or the image of Be Van Dan using his body as a gun mount in the work of artist Le Vinh... show the unspeakable sacrifice of the soldiers of Dien Bien. These images show us the heroic history of Dien Bien.

Endless source of emotions

Painter Luong Xuan Doan, Chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, shared that the exhibition is a very meaningful event, full of affection for the next generation towards the 9-year resistance war against the French of our nation. Looking back at the works of artists, whether directly at the front or later, we can see that these are the most beautiful historical pages preserved in the language of fine arts. Although the works are expressed in oil paint, lacquer, silk or just sketches in pencil, iron pen... but they are the most touching, most moving lines that the artist's eyes see and fossilize in his work. It can be seen that the Dien Bien Phu Victory, the image of the soldier, the image of Uncle Ho's soldiers have never been old, and are always an endless source of emotions for generations of artists today and tomorrow.

According to artist Luong Xuan Doan, the 70 works displayed at the exhibition “The Road to Dien Bien” preserved by the Fine Arts Museum are priceless assets that we are witnessing today. They are all the artists’ heartfelt voices for Dien Bien, towards Dien Bien. From works expressing the fighting spirit, heroic sacrifice, or works depicting the love between the army and the people, expressing the solidarity of our nation…, they are all vivid, intuitive images to help the public better understand history, about the army that comes from the people, fights for the people…

Director of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum Nguyen Anh Minh shared that during the fierce years of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, along with the troops going to battle that year, many artists followed Uncle Ho's call, leaving behind the bustling urban life, joining the resistance war, and directly participating in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. Then, with their feelings and creativity, the artists recorded realistically and vividly the images of life, the arduous, sacrificial but equally romantic battles of our army and people. Those images were expressed by the artists through their works of art and the 70 works displayed at the exhibition "The Road to Dien Bien" are part of them.

Mr. Nguyen Anh Minh affirmed: The Dien Bien Phu victory is a glorious page in history, a beautiful symbol of the indomitable will of those who sacrificed themselves for the victory of the nation. The theme of the Dien Bien Phu victory has always been a source of inspiration and creativity for many generations of artists. The authors expressed their works with gratitude and admiration for those who fought and sacrificed for national independence. In particular, the example of sacrifice of artist and martyr To Ngoc Van at Dien Bien Phu, along with the extremely valuable sketches he left behind, contributed to further depicting the heroic pages of the nation's history.

The exhibition "Road to Dien Bien" is held to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory and is also an opportunity toeducate today's and future generations about patriotism, the will to fight and win; and the spirit of the strength of the great national unity bloc. This is also an opportunity for everyone to express gratitude and remember the generations of ancestors who fought and sacrificed to contribute to the great Dien Bien Phu Victory "famous in five continents, shaking the world", the Director of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum emphasized.
