'Terminator' Arnold Schwarzenegger says divorce from Maria Shriver was 'very difficult'

"Terminator" Arnold Schwarzenegger (75 years old) confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the separation was "very difficult" with his wife of 25 years, calling the divorce a "failure".

Two months before Maria Shriver (67 years old) filed for divorce in July 2011, Arnold Schwarzenegger publicly admitted that he had a son, Joseph Baena (25 years old), with the family's longtime housekeeper, Mildred Baena.

"My real-life marriage to Shriver was very different from the movie. It was my fault, my failure," the actor continued.

The former bodybuilder added: "The divorce was very difficult at first. Eventually, I had to move on. I have a wonderful girlfriend (physiotherapist Heather Milligan-PV). I am really proud of Heather and I love her."

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Shriver resolved their separation and co-parenting. "Maria and I are really good friends, very close. We take pride in the way we raise our children. Even though we had problems, we still celebrate Easter, Mother's Day, Christmas together...", the actor confided.

"If there were an Oscar for divorce settlement, Maria and I would get it for having the least impact on the children. The sweetness and kindness you see in them comes from my wife. The discipline and work ethic comes from me," he added.

Arnold and his ex-wife have four children together, two girls and two boys: Katherine (33 years old), Christina (31 years old), Patrick (29 years old) and Christopher (25 years old).

In February 2023, Shriver also opened up about the split, revealing that she went to a convent to seek advice about life after their marriage ended.

During an appearance on the Making Space with Hoda Kotb podcast, the journalist and writer told host Hoda Kotb that she began to feel like she "had the freedom or permission" to be herself when she filed for divorce.

"For the first time I felt like, 'Oh, I better go and find out, what's the truth?'. I did a lot of things, one of which was to go to a cloister, be quiet, and seek advice," Shriver confided on the podcast.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver finalized their divorce in December 2021, exactly 10 years after announcing their separation.
