Information that the entire batch of Hanayuki Sunscreen Body (1 tube of 100g) was recalled and destroyed because the SPF on the label was 50 but after testing it was only 2.4 made many people angry...
Many consumers are upset and confused about the real quality of the product. Many people request treatment, question the level of skin protection and what will happen to the skin if applying this fake sunscreen.
SPF 2.4 is 20 times lower
The entire Hanayuki Sunscreen Body product (box of 1 tube of 100g) of Doan Di Bang's husband's company was suspended from circulation, recalled and destroyed by the Drug Administration ( Ministry of Health ) because the SPF index on the label was 20 times lower than the test result.
The above sunscreen brand has been advertised by Doan Di Bang in many videos and has claimed to sell a lot. Not only sunscreen, she, her husband and sister advertise many other beauty products directly related to women's health and beauty.
On May 17, Hanayuki Sunscreen Body and Hanayuki Shampoo (also recalled and destroyed by the Drug Administration) were no longer available on the official website Hanayuki.com.vn.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre on May 19, Dr. Pham Thi Uyen Nhi - Deputy Head of the General Planning Department, Head of the Clinical Trial Unit of the Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital - said that the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) index quantifies the ability of sunscreen to protect against UVB rays. This is the ratio between the amount of UV radiation needed to cause an erythema reaction when there is a filter layer compared to when there is no filter layer.
According to the recommendations of the Ministry of Health and the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), sunscreens with an SPF of 30 or higher are recommended for optimal protection, especially in high UV conditions like in Vietnam.
Regarding the sunscreen with SPF 2.4 that the Drug Administration has just recalled, Dr. Uyen Nhi said that it only blocks about 53% of UVB rays compared to the 95% - 97% rate in sunscreens with SPF 30 - 50, recommended by the Ministry of Health to protect against the harmful effects of sunlight.
Doctor Trinh Minh Trang - laser and skin care department, Central Dermatology Hospital - also said that the higher the sun protection index, the longer the skin is protected.
SPF is a measure of the UVB protection offered by cosmetics. It is calculated by the number of hours and percentage of time the sunscreen is applied to the skin.
According to international standards, 1 SPF will be able to protect the skin and limit the harmful effects of UVB rays for about 10 minutes. However, it is only of relative value because it depends on skin type, sunlight intensity and the amount of sunscreen used.
Can cause acute sunburn, premature aging, skin cancer...
What happens to your skin if you use a low-quality sunscreen or one with a low SPF? Doctor Uyen Nhi said that your skin can get acute sunburn (causing redness, burning, blistering), increasing the risk of skin cancer (including basal cell carcinoma - BCC, squamous cell carcinoma - SCC, melanoma...).
In addition, the skin also ages prematurely, manifested through the appearance of wrinkles, brown spots, melasma, sagging skin due to collagen and elastin damage, decreased local immunity, increased risk of infection and skin damage...
When going outdoors and exposed to intense sunlight, Dr. Trang recommends choosing a sunscreen with a high SPF. For example, when going to the beach in the summer, use a sunscreen with an SPF of 50, while when working in an environment without direct sunlight, you need a lower SPF. An SPF that is too low will not achieve the goal of protecting the skin from the sun.
For effective sun protection, Dr. Uyen Nhi also recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen (protects against both UVA and UVB rays), SPF 30 or higher, and water-resistant. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours or after sweating or swimming.
Also avoid the sun from 10am to 2pm every day because UV rays are strongest at this time. Wear sun-protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, long pants, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-protective sunglasses when going out.
Is Doan Di Bang's sunscreen fake?
Speaking with Tuoi Tre, lawyer Diep Nang Binh said that the act of announcing that a product does not have a sun protection factor but the product is labeled with an SPF 50 is a violation.
Specifically, this is an act of trading in counterfeit goods in terms of use value and function as prescribed in Article 9 of Decree No. 98/2020 of the Government on administrative sanctions for violations in commercial activities, production, trading of counterfeit goods, prohibited goods and protection of consumer rights.
"The fact that the SPF 50 sun protection index is printed on the label without information in the product declaration table is considered an illegal labeling, misleading consumers, leading to consumers choosing the wrong product compared to their needs and desires when choosing the product," said Mr. Binh.
According to this expert, there are currently clear regulations on counterfeit goods, including goods with at least one of the quality indicators or basic technical characteristics or the main quantitative substance that creates the use value or utility of the goods only reaching 70% or less compared to the minimum level prescribed in the technical regulations or quality standards registered, announced, applied or printed on the label or packaging of the goods.
So in this case, the product label shows the SFP index of 50 but the test result is only 2.4 (less than 70% of the declared value), then this is considered a fake product because the actual quality of the product is much lower than the quality standards stated on the label.
"Although the product declaration form does not show the SFP 50 index, because the product label already states this content, it is still considered a fake product," Mr. Binh affirmed.
Checking the factory that produced the recalled sunscreen
Regarding two suspended products distributed by Doan Di Bang's husband's company, on May 20, Dong Nai Department of Health Inspectors suddenly inspected the factory producing these products.
According to the company's report at the time of inspection, the company had announced a recall of 1,652 boxes put on the market. Thus, this batch of products had more than 1,600 products put on the market. That means many consumers have bought and used this product.
Currently, consumers are concerned about whether other untested products produced and distributed by this company are safe or not.
