On February 22, at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, USA, the opening general discussion of the 61st annual meeting of the Special Committee on UN Peacekeeping Operations (also known as C-34) took place.

Attending the event were President of the 77th UN General Assembly Csaba Korosi, representatives of member states, including 125 countries sending troops (army and police) to participate in UN peacekeeping forces, and many relevant international and regional organizations.

Delegates focused on discussing emerging challenges to peacekeeping operations – the UN’s essential tool in maintaining international peace and security. In the context of complex global political and security developments, UN peacekeeping forces are increasingly facing many risks, especially the risk of attacks, mine accidents, the impact of epidemics and climate change.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister Counsellor Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, emphasized that sending troops to participate in UN peacekeeping operations since 2014 is an important milestone in Vietnam's foreign policy. The Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations affirmed the desire to continue expanding the scale and scope of sending troops in the coming time, in which priority will be given to promoting the participation of women in peacekeeping operations, aiming for the proportion of female officers and soldiers to account for 15% of the unit force and 20% of the individual force.

The Vietnamese representative called on the UN to take more timely measures to improve the capacity to ensure security and safety for UN peacekeeping forces, especially prioritizing resources for pre-deployment training and education programs, as well as providing necessary medical equipment for missions.

As one of four Southeast Asian countries with an International Training Center recognized by the United Nations to implement the “Tripartite Partnership” program (United Nations, Vietnam, Japan), Vietnam supports the United Nations’ efforts to build a global partnership on peacekeeping and promote cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations, including ASEAN.

There are currently more than 76,000 troops carrying out UN peacekeeping missions in 12 missions in four regions, mainly in Africa.

Since 2014, Vietnam has deployed more than 520 military and police officers to UN peacekeeping missions in the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Abyei and individual positions at the UN.
