Affirming the capacity of disabled youth

On the morning of May 25, the Research Center for Inclusive Development (RCI) organized the "Opportunity Station" connection program within the framework of the project "Vocational training and improving the inclusive working environment for youth with disabilities" sponsored by the Liliane Fonds Foundation (Netherlands).

The message from the program aims to affirm the capacity of disabled youth, promote vocational training, employment and social integration opportunities for disabled youth.

Speaking at the program, Director of the Center for Inclusive Development Research Nguyen Thanh Thuy emphasized that the special point of this event is that it is organized by young people with disabilities who are Ambassadors of the project "Vocational training and improving the inclusive working environment for young people with disabilities", with the aim of enhancing understanding of different types of disabilities and the diversity in working abilities of young people with disabilities. At the same time, it provides information on support resources for young people with disabilities and their parents about employment opportunities. Along with that, the event aims to create a space for connection, sharing and inspiration for stakeholders, thereby affirming the capacity of young people with disabilities, creating a solid foundation for connection with stakeholders to build and promote vocational training, employment and social integration opportunities for young people with disabilities.

Within the framework of the program, participants experience working with visually impaired youth, instructing them on how to use phones/computers and using canes for visually impaired people. Along with that is the experience of bartending, enjoying drinks according to available recipes. In addition, there are activities to experience hairdressing, simple bangs cutting, fake curling, nail care... In particular, the program also has the experience of using sign language for deaf/hearing impaired people, learning about deaf culture; there is a career counseling counter and providing recruitment information about jobs for disabled youth.

At the program, the "Overcoming Limits - Touching the Future" seminar was also held, with the participation of businesses employing disabled workers, disabled youth who are employees of companies, relatives of disabled youth workers... The sharing of vocational training and working experiences of disabled youth, as well as the support of disabled youth in the process of participating in the labor market by parents and caregivers at the program is truly meaningful for families with disabled youth attending the program.

Along with that, the program "Opportunity Station Dialogue: Businesses and disabled youth discuss job skills that disabled youth need" held at the event also provided a lot of useful information, linked to reality.

Representatives of enterprises, including CEO of LilForest Company Ngoc Thanh Phuc; President of Naturweg Social Enterprise Nguyen Hai Yen; General Director of We Edit Vietnam Co., Ltd. Vu Thi Quyen... shared the reasons why these enterprises prioritize recruiting and using young people with disabilities, including: Many young people with disabilities have the spirit of overcoming difficulties, determination, progress, honesty, diligence... These workers also work with a high sense of responsibility, eager to learn. In particular, many disabled workers work with a very high level of concentration, have a cooperative mindset, are persistent and energetic.

Business representatives also recommended that young workers with disabilities need to practice professional skills such as the ability to synthesize marketing and sales information; work organization skills, flexible thinking in problem solving; computer and smartphone skills; flexible communication skills; time management skills, word processing; teamwork skills; especially self-study and self-development skills...

Providing more information on the state's preferential policies to encourage businesses to recruit disabled workers, Vice President and Head of the Employment Department of the Hanoi Association of the Disabled Trinh Xuan Dung emphasized: Articles 34 and 35 of the Law on the Disabled affirm: The State encourages agencies, organizations and businesses to hire disabled workers. Production and business establishments employing 30% or more of the total workforce with disabilities are supported to improve working conditions and environments suitable for the disabled, receive loans at preferential interest rates, and are given priority in leasing land and premises; Exemption and reduction of land, premises and water surface rent for production and business according to the proportion of disabled workers, the level of disability of workers and the scale of the enterprise... The important thing is that with the support of society and enterprises, young people with disabilities need to be proactive, make efforts to study, practice skills, confidently integrate into the community fully, have jobs and income to be able to live independently, and contribute their own value to the community.
