Japanese professor donates 1 billion VND in prize money to Vietnamese students

Previously, Prof. Dr. Furuta Motoo - President of Vietnam - Japan University also spent most of his awards and book royalties to award scholarships to Vietnamese students.

With his historical work on the national policies of Vietnamese Communists - in the field of social sciences and humanities, Prof. Dr. Furuta Motoo - President of Vietnam - Japan University, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, became the first foreign scientist to receive the Bao Son Award after many years of organization.

After receiving the award, he donated 1 billion VND of the prize money to the scholarship fund for students of Vietnam - Japan University.

Previously, at the award ceremony, he shared: "Vietnam is my first love and also my loyal love for half a century. It can be said that I am a foreign scientist Made in Vietnam."

According to Hanoi National University, over the years, Mr. Furuta Motoo has quietly and persistently contributed, especially dedicating most of his awards and book royalties to scholarships for students of Vietnam-Japan University.

At Vietnam Japan University, in most scholarship awarding periods, the name of the Furuta Scholarship is always a valuable reward for excellent students, those with especially difficult circumstances or for activities connecting training and research of students and trainees with Japan.

In 2020, he donated 2 million yen from the Daido Seimei Prize - a prestigious award from the Japanese Government to support the first batch of students majoring in Japanese studies.

In addition, he has connected and called for funding through science clubs, Japanese businessmen and intellectuals to sponsor students of Vietnam-Japan University, such as Azabu Fund (1.3 million JPY and 155 million VND), Mr. Takehara (200 million VND) and many other organizations.

Mr. Furuta Motoo is known as the leading researcher of Vietnam studies in Japan, a prestigious expert on Vietnamese history and politics. He is fluent in Vietnamese and has devoted his entire career to researching Vietnam.

Prof. Dr. Furuta Motoo was the principal of the School of General Studies, University of Tokyo (2001-2002); former vice president of the University of Tokyo (2004-2006); former director of the University of Tokyo library (2009-2015). He is currently the principal of the Vietnam-Japan University, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

His contributions have been recognized with many noble titles and awards such as the honorary doctorate degree awarded by Hanoi National University, the Friendship Medal in 1980; the State Prize for Science and Technology in 2012; and the Friendship Medal in 2013.
