According to the Daily Mail, a glacier avalanche occurred in southern Switzerland, burying the small village of Blatten on the afternoon of May 28 - a week after residents were asked to evacuate to ensure safety.

Several houses in the village of Blatten were destroyed and one person is currently missing.

Video footage of the incident shows a huge “ice cloud” falling on the mountainside and valley where the village is located. Stephane Ganzer, an official in the canton of Valais, told Swiss media that about 90% of the village of Blatten was covered.

Drone footage broadcast by Swiss national broadcaster SRF showed mud completely covering much of the village and the river that runs through it.

Local police added that the missing 64-year-old man was a local resident who was in the area at the time of the glacier collapse.

A search and rescue operation has been launched, with three experts airlifted to the scene, while a drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera was also used.

"Despite great efforts by the authorities, the man has not been found," police said.

The glacier landslide was predicted many days ago.

"We lost our village. The village is under rubble. We will rebuild it," said Blatten Mayor Matthias Bellwald.
