According to News Week, located about 450 km north of the capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky of Kamchatka (Russia), Klyuchevskoy is one of the highest volcanoes in the world .
The 4,750-meter-high volcano erupted just hours after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Russia on July 30, the geophysical service of the Russian Academy of Sciences said. Explosions and lava flows were visible on the volcano's western flank.
"The volcano erupted with columns of ash up to 3 kilometers high," state media reported.
Kamchatka, often called the "land of fire and ice," is one of the most seismically active volcanic regions in the world, with about 300 volcanoes, including 29 active ones, according to NASA's Earth Observatory.
Previously, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake with an epicenter 136 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky was recorded at around 11:30 a.m. on July 30 (local time).
The earthquake prompted many countries to issue tsunami warnings and order evacuations in dangerous areas. However, by the evening of July 30, some countries had lifted or downgraded their tsunami warnings.
