A series of 10 projects on the pearl island of Phu Quoc simultaneously started construction today, including the Phu Quoc airport expansion project, APEC Boulevard, and Phu Quoc smart operations center.

Today, September 24, Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone, An Giang province simultaneously started construction of 10 projects to welcome the 1st Provincial Party Congress for the 2025-2030 term. This is a cluster of projects serving the APEC Summit Week (Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum) 2027 with a total investment of hundreds of thousands of billions of VND.

Specifically, the projects include: Upgrading and expanding Phu Quoc International Airport; Provincial Road DT.975 (connecting Phu Quoc Airport - DT.975 - DT.973); APEC Avenue; Cua Can Lake; Undergrounding technical infrastructure in Duong Dong area; Undergrounding technical infrastructure project in An Thoi area; Investing in technical infrastructure, digital transformation to build a smart monitoring and operating center for comprehensive management of Phu Quoc special zone; Ong Quan Mountain Eco-tourism Urban Area; Mixed-use urban area - Dat Do Beach and Investment project to build An Thoi resettlement area.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of 10 projects in Phu Quoc, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung affirmed that this is a strategic event, marking an important step in Vietnam's preparation journey to successfully host APEC 2027.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, preparations for APEC 2027 are divided into three phases. 2025 will be a comprehensive launch, 2026 will be basically completed, and 2027 will be held with a focus on the APEC Summit Week. In particular, preparing facilities and upgrading infrastructure are given top priority.

The Government has assigned 15 tasks related to the implementation of 21 projects with 11 specific policies, including 6 specific policies for the construction of essential infrastructure works and 5 specific policies for the construction of Phu Quoc Airport.

"The launch of 10 key infrastructure projects in the system of more than 21 key projects serving the APEC Conference are modern infrastructure works that not only meet the conference's needs, but also contribute to promoting the long-term development of the locality and the country," Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung affirmed.

In the group of projects serving the APEC 2027 Summit Week, more than 4 months ago, Sun Group Corporation received the decision approving the results of selecting investors for 3 projects, with a total capital of nearly 92,000 billion VND.

Mr. Bui Thanh Trung, Chairman of Sun Group Southern Region, pledged that the enterprise would mobilize the highest level of resources, concentrate highly to implement correctly, even ahead of schedule, ensuring the highest economic efficiency for the projects.

The Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project is invested in the form of direct business, with a total investment of 21,998 billion VND. The project is divided into 2 investment phases including 2025 - 2027 and 2027 - 2030.

As approved, Phu Quoc International Airport will be comprehensively upgraded, aiming to become one of the most modern and smart airports in the world. The airport will reach level 4E, according to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Runway infrastructure includes expanded runway 1 and newly built runway 2, with lengths of 3,500 m and 3,300 m respectively.

The aircraft parking system will be expanded to more than 100 positions, including 45 wide-body aircraft parking positions combined with a modern telescopic system.

In addition, the newly built T2 terminal will have a capacity to serve 6 million passengers/year, integrating the world's leading modern and intelligent operating technology system, such as remote check-in process, automatic baggage sorting, biometric recognition technology, helping check-in time to only 15-20 seconds/person.

A new VIP terminal was also built, ensuring the highest standards of security, protocol, and amenities, meeting the strict requirements of international events, including APEC 2027.

The cargo terminal is expanded to reach 25,000 tons/year.

Provincial Road DT 975 is considered a key infrastructure project, with a length of 19.26 km, a total investment of VND 2,034 billion, directly connecting Phu Quoc Airport, the main traffic gateway of the island and the APEC conference center area.

The Mixed Urban Area Project – Bai Dat Do has a total investment of 64,000 billion VND. In phase 1, from the third quarter of 2025 to the second quarter of 2027, the project will build technical infrastructure, parks, beaches and squares, creating a landscape in sync with the APEC Multifunctional Complex. Along with that, there will also be high-class hotels.

The Ong Quan Mountain Eco-tourism Mixed Urban Area Project has a total investment of 5,550 billion VND, this is an ecological destination serving APEC 2027.

In mid-May, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 948 assigning the task of preparing conditions for the rapid implementation of projects serving the 2027 APEC Conference in Phu Quoc City, Kien Giang Province - now Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone, An Giang Province.

The decision assigned the Provincial People's Committee to coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies to prepare conditions for the successful organization of the APEC 2027 Conference in Phu Quoc, in association with the sustainable development of the locality and the country. This is a foreign affairs activity and a political task of the country.

Regarding capital for projects, the Central Government supports 70%, the local budget balances 30% for the projects of Cua Can Freshwater Reservoir and Duong Dong 2 Reservoir; APEC multi-functional complex, DT.975 road, urban train line from Phu Quoc airport to the Convention Center, urban beautification projects and Phu Quoc operating center.

For the APEC Avenue project, the central budget supports 50%, the locality and the investor 50%. This avenue is about 3 km long, 68 m wide, with an estimated investment capital of 1,820 billion VND.
