The convincing victory right on Thai soil against the host country team – the “traditional” rival of Vietnamese football – has been a strong inspiration, like a boost for the country’s sports on the journey to conquer new heights.
Not only was this the third time the national men's football team won the Southeast Asian championship, it was also the first time the national men's football team lifted the championship trophy at a tournament held on an away field. This achievement not only had sporting significance, but also contributed to arousing the confidence and national pride of fans across the country.
Breakthrough achievements, speed up preparation for SEA Games 33
Right after the impressive achievements at the beginning of the year, Vietnam's high-performance sports continued to make a strong impression with a series of resounding victories. In just the first 6 months of the year, the teams brought home a total of 337 international medals including: 103 gold medals, 112 silver medals and 122 bronze medals.
Including 20 gold medals, 27 silver medals, 19 bronze medals at world- level tournaments; 40 gold medals, 60 silver medals, 92 bronze medals at Asian tournaments; 33 gold medals, 19 silver medals, 10 bronze medals at Southeast Asian tournaments; 10 gold medals, 6 silver medals, 1 bronze medal at other international open tournaments.
Many outstanding achievements left a mark on history, such as the women's sepak takraw team winning the World Cup for the first time, the shooting team winning 3 gold medals, 3 silver medals, 5 bronze medals at the Asian Championship, and the Vietnamese karate team also with 3 impressive gold medals at the Asian Championship.
In addition, mass sports have also made steady progress. Under the direction of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the whole sector has promoted the Campaign “All people exercise following the example of great Uncle Ho” in conjunction with major movements such as “All people unite to build a cultural life” and the New Rural Development Program.
Many community sports activities took place enthusiastically during Tet and the Sports Activity Month to celebrate the 79th anniversary of the Traditional Day of Vietnam Sports Industry (March 27, 1946 - March 27, 2025).
The industry also organized a series of events to develop grassroots sports: 7 national mass sports tournaments, 5 professional training courses attracting more than 4,100 cadres, coaches, athletes, and grassroots collaborators nationwide.
Towards the major goals of the year – especially the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand and the Asian Youth Games in Bahrain – the sports industry has implemented a proactive, scientific and methodical preparation plan.
Up to now, 2,186 athletes, 400 coaches and 6 experts have been summoned for training at national training centers and Bac Ninh University of Sports. Particularly, the youth force including 917 athletes and 176 coaches have been invested in systematic training.
Notably, the industry has initially applied artificial intelligence (AI) to training in four key sports: shooting, archery, taekwondo and boxing. The application of technology in training opens up expectations to help improve performance and enhance the professional capacity of athletes in Olympic sports.
At the same time, the sports industry coordinated with localities and national sports federations to organize 100 national and international sports tournaments and 9 specialized training courses for coaches and referees - ensuring professional quality and the best preparation for teams heading to the SEA Games.
Steady on the finish line, aiming for a long-term vision
With the spirit of “accelerating to reach the finish line”, in the last 6 months of the year, Vietnamese sports continue to pursue many strategic goals. Including completing long-term development projects: Program for developing key sports for the Olympics and ASIAD in the period of 2026-2046; Project for developing Vietnamese athletics to 2045; Project for developing Vietnamese football to 2045…
Along with that are fundamental tasks such as guiding localities to organize Sports Festivals at all levels towards the 10th National Sports Festival in 2026, continuing to promote the Campaign "All people exercise following the example of great Uncle Ho" and organizing the ASEAN Sports Ministers Meeting (AMMS8) in 2025.
The industry will also coordinate with sports federations, localities and related units to organize sports events in the national system, while preparing the necessary forces and conditions to participate in important international tournaments, ensuring the image and position of Vietnamese sports in the regional and continental arena.
The biggest goal is still to compete with high results, striving to enter the top 2 of SEA Games 33, although this is determined to be a challenging Games when Thailand - the host - clearly shows its determination to regain the number one position in Southeast Asia.
However, overcoming high mountains does not weaken the will. With serious preparation, strong determination and unyielding competitive spirit, Vietnamese sports are facing the opportunity to realize the gold aspiration in the regional arena.
The year 2025 is witnessing a bright start for Vietnamese sports, from the regional arena to the world arena. Resounding achievements at the ASEAN Cup, stable performance in many strong sports, and a well-planned strategy to prepare for the 33rd SEA Games and major arenas are positive signs, showing that the country's sports are gradually making breakthroughs, affirming its position in the region and reaching the continental level.
From the pitch and arena in Thailand to the Bahrain arena, Vietnamese sports carry the aspirations of a young, resilient nation, aiming for new heights in the future.
