Thai Nguyen province currently has Ba Be National Park, Kim Hy Nature Reserve, Nam Xuan Lac Species and Habitat Conservation Area and Than Sa-Phuong Hoang Nature Reserve. Majestic natural scenery, mild climate and rich cultural identity of ethnic groups..., all create great potential for ecotourism development in the locality.
According to the Director of the Nam Xuan Lac Luong Quoc Hai Species and Habitat Conservation Area Management Board, the area covers more than 4,155 hectares, of which the strictly protected area alone is more than 2,500 hectares. The area has 653 species of higher plants, including 54 rare species listed in the Vietnam Red Book, and 9 species listed in the IUCN Red List. Currently, all large trees here are numbered, monitored for growth and strictly managed. Notably, deep in the forests of the conservation area, there are many historical relics and evidences from the French colonial period. That is a stone path tens of kilometers long, originally built by the French for horseback riding and transporting ores. After hundreds of years of sun and rain, this route still exists, although many sections are overgrown with grass and trees. In addition, the ore winch cable system (provincial relic) - evidence of the French colonialists' exploitation of Ban Thi lead and zinc mine workers from 1909-1941 - also has many traces.
To exploit the tourism potential in this conservation area, in 2024, Bac Kan province (old) approved a tourism project here with the goal of developing 5 eco-tourism, resort and entertainment destinations. Based on the project, the Management Board of the area has invited people to rent forest environments to develop tourism at 4 destinations and 9 tourist routes on an area of nearly 500 hectares. It can be seen that hidden deep under the canopy of Ba Be National Park and conservation areas in Thai Nguyen, there is a lot of potential. When "awakened", the "green forest secrets" will certainly become attractive destinations for tourists.
In Than Sa-Phuong Hoang Nature Reserve, Mo Ga stream is a scenic spot with majestic nature and cool climate. After Thai Nguyen province (old) invested in construction, this tourist area has attracted tens of thousands of visitors every year. Not only that, the authorities also discovered Mo Ga cave deep inside the rocky mountain thousands of meters long, mysterious and attractive. According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Thai Nguyen, this is a cave with long, beautiful water flows, with great potential for adventure tourism development. Thai Nguyen province has invited British cave experts and adventure tourism unit Oxalis Adventure to conduct in-depth surveys. From the results of very effective tourism exploitation here when there is a development project from 2022, the province is actively implementing investment attraction for the period up to 2030. Accordingly, it will invest in high-quality items such as cable cars, glass bridges, adventure tourism, etc.; aims to welcome about 200,000 visitors/year, creating jobs for about 1,000 people.
According to the plan, the period of 2026-2030 is the time to expand the scale, shape the typical products and build the eco-tourism brand at Kim Hy Nature Reserve on the tourism map. Activities such as: Trekking through the forest, watching animals, biological research, learning about folk festivals... are the main tourism products. Nam Xuan Lac Species and Habitat Conservation Area also focuses on building tourist routes through the forest, which will be completed in the period of 2026-2030, generating revenue from resort services, experiences, environmental education, contributing to financial autonomy for the Management Board and creating sustainable livelihoods for the people.
Previously, Bac Kan province (old) owned Ba Be National Park and two nature reserves and conservation areas, but due to lack of resources and poor transportation, the exploitation of tourism potential was limited. Now, when merging to form the new Thai Nguyen province, these potentials promise to be strongly exploited.
Most recently, at the end of June 2025, the Prime Minister approved the Plan for the preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of the special national relic of Ba Be Lake; assigned Thai Nguyen province to implement this plan. Accordingly, the planning area has an area of 10,048 hectares, including: Protection area I of more than 952 hectares; Protection area II of more than 9,095 hectares; the area to promote the value of the relic of more than 136 hectares outside the protection area, added to the plan to organize resettlement space, traffic, technical infrastructure, auxiliary service works, etc.
According to the plan, Ba Be Lake is the core, establishing 4 main functional spaces: The North exploits the value of river landscape, waterfalls, natural caves, indigenous culture, and is a connection point with Na Hang (Tuyen Quang province). The South forms a space to preserve and promote culture, indigenous architecture, landscape, and tourism along the Leng River. The East builds a reception center, operates, and exploits eco-tourism products, environmental education, and resorts associated with Ba Be National Park. The West is a space to preserve and exploit the culture of the H'Mong community, combining resort tourism, entertainment, and ecology.
The specific goal set by the Government in the planning is to develop sustainable tourism in Ba Be Lake, form a unique brand, become a national tourist area before 2030 and a key tourist center of the entire midland and mountainous region of the North. In addition, in order to remove traffic obstacles, Thai Nguyen province has proposed to the Central Government to prepare for the implementation of the projects of the Hanoi-Thai Nguyen-Cho Moi, Thai Nguyen-Lang Son and Bac Kan-Cao Bang expressways.
