(QNO) - After many years of experimenting with different livestock models, Mr. Nguyen Trung Dung (Tra Duong, Bac Tra My) has now successfully implemented the idea of starting a civet farming business with high economic efficiency.

In May 2020, Mr. Nguyen Trung Dung (Tra Duong commune, Bac Tra My) bought 6 breeding civets, including 5 females and 1 male, to raise on a trial basis. After 2 months of raising, the civets began to reproduce, each litter having 2 to 5 babies. A female civet gives birth to 2 to 3 litters a year.

Up to now, Mr. Dung's civet herd in Bac Tra My district has reached 30 civets. Mr. Dung has also invested over 500 million VND to build barns, food cookers...

Civets raised for 9 months can be sold, with an average weight of 3 - 4 kg/civet. Currently, each kilogram of civet costs nearly 2 million VND.

Seeing the high economic efficiency, Mr. Nguyen Trung Dung also cooperated with a person in Tien An commune (Tien Phuoc) to open a second civet breeding facility. At this facility, there are 117 civets, including breeding civets and reserve civets.

Mr. Do Van Dat, the person who directly takes care of the civets at the Tien An facility (Tien Phuoc), said: "The main food source for civets is fish, chicken heads cooked into porridge, and fruits such as ripe bananas, jackfruit, pineapple... Civets like to live alone, so adult civets must be raised in separate cages so they have space to move around."

Mr. Dung's civet farm is very clean and airy. The roof is designed to receive sunlight for the civets to sunbathe. To have enough food for the civets, Mr. Dung has also proactively planted hundreds of banana trees in the garden. Mr. Dung also plans to dig more ponds to raise fish at the Bac Tra My facility to save money on buying food for the civets.

"Currently, my family can master the technique of raising civets as well as have enough conditions to supply breeding animals to people who want to accompany this pet. However, my family also hopes that the authorities at all levels will pay attention to policies to support appropriate loan sources so that my family can continue to expand the scale of investment in raising civets" - Mr. Dung said.

In the first 3 months of 2023, Mr. Dung's family's civet farm sold 39 civets, earning a profit of over 200 million VND. Although many restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Khanh Hoa have placed orders to buy civet meat, Mr. Dung's family still prioritizes selling civet breeding to people in neighboring areas.

In the coming time, Mr. Dung will continue to expand the scale and quantity of civet farming towards creating the Thinh Phat civet brand. At the same time, he also focuses on connecting and supporting people with the same idea of starting a civet farming business in providing breeds, breeding techniques and product output.
