The hacker then sent about 800 ETH to Tornado Cash, a platform that helps hide the origin of cryptocurrency transactions. As of now, about $1.25 million is still sitting in an Ethereum wallet containing currencies like DAI and ETH.
This incident is just one in a series of attacks by the Lazarus group, which has increasingly focused on high-value crypto assets. On June 27, 2025, ZachXBT discovered that the group was behind an attack that targeted multiple NFT projects associated with Matt Furie, the creator of the popular Pepe character. Projects such as ChainSaw and Favrr were also affected. Since June 18, hackers have taken control of multiple NFT contracts, creating and dumping NFTs, stealing approximately $1 million from these projects.
The investigation found that the stolen funds were moved through three different wallets. The hackers then converted some of the ETH to stablecoins and transferred them to the MEXC exchange. There are indications that the group frequently targets cryptocurrency projects, using a specific deposit address on MEXC to transfer stablecoins.
Additionally, the analysis found links to GitHub accounts with Korean language settings and time zones matching North Korea, reinforcing suspicions about the hacker group's origins.
Pi2Day 2025 Introduces New Tools, But Pi Price Still Doesn't Break Out
The Pi2Day event that took place on June 28, 2025 is expected to create a breakthrough for Pi Network.
