Urban tree planning and management is one of the important contents in urban planning, contributing to regulating temperature, creating shade, increasing urban beauty and improving the living environment. Son La City has adjusted and supplemented appropriate tree planting density on inner-city roads, aiming at the goal of urban development towards green growth, adapting to climate change.

Mr. Nguyen The Phuong, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee, said: The City People's Committee has reviewed and integrated elements of trees, water surfaces, etc. into urban planning projects. Directing departments and offices to study urban planning in the direction of green urban areas, ecological urban areas, building on the principle of taking the environment as the foundation for development, minimizing carbon emissions, and using renewable energy. Every year, signing a contract with Son La Urban Environment and Services Joint Stock Company to carry out additional planting, new planting, and care for urban trees.

Currently, the city's urban green tree system has been renovated, supplemented, and replaced on a number of streets and flower gardens, ensuring compliance with the overall master plan for urban green tree development in the province.
Mr. Nguyen Cong Dinh, Director of the Urban Green Tree Enterprise, Son La Urban Environment and Services Joint Stock Company, informed: Since the beginning of the year, the Enterprise has renovated and replaced 400m2 of carpet trees and border trees; cared for 200 poorly developed trees on Le Duan Street; renovated and planted 500m2 of new grass in Dong Xen Park, replanted border trees and carpet trees in Ho Sanh flower gardens, in front of the Provincial Party Committee gate, 26/8, 26/10 and the Provincial Cultural - Cinema Center... Urban green trees are periodically cared for, checked and their development status is determined, in order to have timely measures to handle impacts on the development of the trees.

In addition, the City has planted about 3,500 more trees on Hoang Quoc Viet, Tran Phu, Nguyen Van Cu, National Highway 279D, National Highway 6, Nam La stream embankment, Northwest Square area and planted 10,000 Bauhinia trees as planned, increasing the total green area of the entire city to 1.7 million m2 ; the average green area reached 6.69 m2 /person.
The types of trees selected for planting in the urban green tree list mainly include: Lat, avocado, dracontomelon, bulrush, black star, nhoi, phoenix, soapberry, Indian laurel, caviar, ban flower, chicken egg, lagerstroemia, yellow canary, king areca, etc., ensuring suitability for each locality.
Le Duan Street is nearly 10 km long, along the Chieng Sinh and Quyet Tam wards, always covered with green shade of the Indian mahogany trees and Bauhinia trees planted at fixed medians and on both sides of the road. Every March, Bauhinia flowers bloom, making anyone passing by extremely impressed.

The road to the Son La Prison National Special Relic Site is always shaded all year round by decades-old and tens-of-meter-high eucalyptus and teak trees; becoming a place for tourists to check in and take photos to preserve beautiful moments.

In the Northwest Square, the green tree system is planted and numbered according to the plan, with shade trees, low-lying trees and grass carpets, creating a space filled with green and flowers all year round. In particular, the landscape hill area has 1,418 trees, with 34 species of trees, the most of which are Ban trees, sandalwood, trumpet trees... The roads have 340 yellow anemone, Taiwan banyan, cho chi, and mahogany trees. The Uncle Ho Fish Pond area has 155 pearl trees, magnolia trees, Indian laurel trees, and willow trees. Along the Nam La stream embankment from Cau Trang to Coong Noi bridge, 203 golden bell trees are planted.

In addition to shade trees, along the main roads of the City, there are also flower pots and tubs of bougainvillea with bright colors, creating beautiful flower routes and bringing an environmentally friendly balance to the streets.

Ms. Hoang Thu Ha, a tourist from Hanoi , shared: Every time I return to my hometown, I see the city's appearance change, becoming more beautiful. I am especially impressed with the urban greenery, many green spaces in the wards have been renovated, newly planted, with grass added, and beautiful flowers planted. Especially the Ban tree, a typical flower of the Northwest, is planted a lot.

In addition to the public service green tree system, the City has been promoting propaganda and mobilizing groups and villages to raise awareness of protecting and developing green spaces in residential areas. Many groups and villages have built flower and ornamental tree roads to bring green space, creating highlights for residential areas, aiming to meet the criteria of a type I urban area.
