In the Program of restructuring the agricultural sector towards increasing added value and sustainable development associated with new rural construction of the province, the content of improving production quality is an important content to create positive signals in promoting the development of agricultural production of the province.
Varieties are one of the factors that create production quality, so constantly renewing the variety, including rice varieties, is a fundamental solution to improve quality and production efficiency. In recent years, the specialized agencies of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Tri have built many models to test new rice varieties with advanced science and technology and achieved many results.
After three consecutive trials, the provincial agricultural sector will be able to select high-yield, high-quality rice varieties that are suitable for local weather, climate and soil conditions for production, while also adapting to climate change. The results from the trial models are the basis for selecting new rice varieties with high yield, quality and suitable for soil and climate conditions in the province's regions and adding them to the province's rice variety collection.
In recent years, the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection has coordinated with seed production and trading companies inside and outside the province to test many new rice varieties such as: TBR39, HD9, LP5, Hana167, TBR87, DT80, BT09... in districts in the province's delta areas with favorable land conditions and proactive irrigation water sources.
Through the evaluation of the results of many trials, it is shown that there are many promising varieties, with a short growing period suitable for organizing 2-crop production in the province, little or mildly infected with pests and diseases, good resistance to unfavorable climate conditions, less prone to lodging, high yield from 60-70 quintals/ha/crop, good quality suitable for production in the province such as: HD9, HG12, ADI28, VNR10, LP5, DT80... Varieties that have passed 3 trials can gradually replace old rice varieties that have degenerated, low yield, low quality and are infected with pests and diseases in the area.
In the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop, based on the results of field trials over several consecutive crops, the provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection has selected 4 new promising rice varieties to include in the province's main rice variety structure, including: VRN10, LP5, HG12, DT80 with outstanding characteristics such as: short growth period (120 days in the winter-spring crop and 90-95 days in the summer-autumn crop); good cold and heat tolerance, lodging resistance, and good pest and disease resistance; long, slender, bright yellow rice grains, sticky, delicious rice, with a light aroma...
Regarding rice products sold on the market, through consulting with farmers - who directly produce them, they said that these are good quality rice varieties with high economic value, and sell for higher prices than other varieties. At field workshops, farmers requested the province to approve mass production to replace some rice varieties that have degenerated, are no longer suitable for the current weather conditions and pests, in order to increase income per unit area, and increase economic efficiency for rice farmers.
Currently, HG12 rice variety is included in the province's main rice variety structure from the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop, VRN10 rice variety is included in the supplementary rice variety structure (the structure is arranged to account for about 20% of the total rice cultivation area of the province), LP5 and DT80 varieties are gradually put into production through the crops (each crop accounts for about 10% of the area).
In the current period, the provincial agricultural sector focuses on restructuring based on the formation of a set of 6 key plants and 2 animals approved by the province. The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection continues to focus on advising on shifting from traditional production to organic production, small-scale production to large-scale, quality, value according to the chain, promoting the application of technical advances and new technologies in production, in which, seed work is considered a breakthrough to increase production value.
In the coming time, the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection will continue to coordinate with rice seed production companies inside and outside the province, organize testing and trial production of new, promising rice varieties with high yield and quality, suitable for production conditions in the province, select and gradually replace old, unsuitable rice varieties, and restore some high-quality rice varieties that have degenerated during the production process...
In the increasingly harsh weather conditions due to climate change, the continuous selection of suitable rice varieties to supplement the province's main rice varieties will meet the requirements of quality, yield, and market demand to create continuously growing production value, meeting the requirements of sustainable agricultural production development of the province.
