Do I have to go to school all day after the semester exam?

Many parents think that except for students in final grades like 9th and 12th grade who are currently focusing on reviewing for exams, other grades go to school after finishing their semester exams to play and wait for summer break. Is that really true?

STUDENTS GET A LOT OF PRACTICE

In the 34th and 35th weeks of this school year (a school year has 35 weeks of actual study - PV ) in class 4/8 of Kim Dong Primary School, Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City, students participated in exciting lessons andeducational activities such as STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), fine arts, handwriting practice... in accordance with the educational program allocated according to the school year's education plan. Recently, in the STEM activity, Ms. Tran Thi Hoai Nghi, the homeroom teacher, let the students experience creative activities using plastic spoons, colored paper, creating animal shapes, and completing paintings according to their preferences. In addition, in the last week of the school year, Ms. Nghi let her students practice handwriting and write thank you notes to their loved ones.

"Many parents think that their children have finished their semester exams and now they are in class playing. In reality, this is not the case. This period is an opportunity for students to practice a lot, especially in STEM and fine arts subjects. From here, homeroom teachers can further encourage students' creativity and talents," said Ms. Nghi.

ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS TO ASSESS THEMSELVES

This 2024-2025 school year, students at Thuan Kieu Primary School, District 12, Ho Chi Minh City will take the second semester exam earlier than every year (in weeks 32 and 33). Ms. Le Thi Thoa, Principal of the school, said that after the final exam of the second semester, according to the plan, there will still be content in the teaching plan for weeks 34 and 35. In addition, classes organize a number of activities for students to self-evaluate, such as comparing with the goals set at the beginning of the year - written in the personal plan at the beginning of the year - then building a personal plan during the summer vacation; writing messages to teachers, friends, and parents.

In the last weeks of the school year, the school organizes for students to participate in a national children's painting competition and exhibition. This work is carried out during self-study hours, class activities, or integrated into appropriate class hours. The school arranges to make up for some missed lessons in other subjects and educational activities due to overlapping test schedules; and increases some review lessons for international computer science exams for students in grades 3, 4, and 5.

"In addition, in the last weeks of the school year, Thuan Kieu Primary School also organizes activities such as the Children's Voice Listening Forum; students participate in the city-level school football tournament; prepare for the gratitude and maturity ceremony of 5th grade students on May 26 and the year-end ceremony (May 27). To prepare for the gratitude ceremony, 5th grade students will write down words of gratitude, things they have not said to send to their parents, relatives...; or each 5th grade class will participate in a performance in the gratitude ceremony, the children will arrange time to practice. This time will be very memorable for all the children", Ms. Thoa shared.

WEEK OF USEFUL EDUCATIONAL PLANS

Mr. Nguyen Viet Duc, a literature teacher at Dien Hong Secondary and High School, District 10, Ho Chi Minh City, said that in addition to teaching plans, each school also has educational activity plans. All of these plans are developed from the beginning of the school year and implemented throughout. During this period, after students finish their final exams, in addition to completing the content of the teaching plan for weeks 34 and 35, teachers organize meaningful educational activities. Recently, on May 19, in the school yard, the literature group of Dien Hong Secondary and High School organized the final round of the debate competition with the theme "My beloved Fatherland" with the participation of about 900 students from all grades and many teachers of the school. In addition, the literature group also organized an exhibition of "Reading Diary" products made by students to spread the value that books bring.

The topics raised in the debate competition are very current, so that the teams can present their views and arguments. For example, the issue of starting a business is a strong trend among young people, but the path to starting a business always comes with risks and financial pressure, so what is the choice for young people today? Or another topic that requires students to use a lot of critical thinking, applying the knowledge they have learned about listening and speaking skills: "Some people think that living for the community is showing responsibility to the country and patriotism, but others think that only when young people know how to live with passion, pursue personal goals, and improve themselves, then they will have enough capacity to contribute to building the Fatherland, so what is your opinion?". According to teacher Nguyen Viet Duc, debate competitions and book exhibitions are very interesting for many students.

GAINED MANY INTERESTING KNOWLEDGE AND LESSONS

Mr. Do Dinh Dao, Principal of Nguyen Huu Tho High School, District 4, Ho Chi Minh City, said that in weeks 34 and 35, students in the school have completed their final exams. While 12th graders are focusing on the upcoming high school graduation exam, 10th and 11th graders are also gaining a lot of knowledge and interesting lessons in the weeks before summer vacation through many activities planned by the school.

On May 13, Nguyen Huu Tho High School organized an extracurricular program "Interdisciplinary STEM playground of math - chemistry - biology - English" for the 2024 - 2025 school year. Each participating student was given a passport with full name, class and participation in STEM activities. Students who completed the challenge in each subject would have their passport stamped and receive a blind bag as a gift in the chemistry lab. All students were excited to participate.

Previously, on May 8, with the theme "HCMC - Faith and Aspiration", the school's school stage program took place emotionally, aiming to pay tribute to the great contributions of generations of fathers and brothers who sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland; at the same time, educating students about the tradition of patriotism and national pride, arousing a sense of responsibility and aspiration to contribute in the young generation.

Notably, according to Mr. Do Dinh Dao, in weeks 34 and 35, teachers complete the curriculum. This is also the time when subject teachers orient students on learning methods in the following years. In the last two weeks of the school year, homeroom teachers and subject teachers give students a lot of advice on studying in the next period; or for those who want to change the combination chosen in grade 10, for example, what to do, what to pay attention to when changing. For students in grade 11, teachers also advise and orient them about the 2026 high school graduation exam such as which subjects are compulsory, which subjects are optional... so that they can prepare mentally for the next school year.

"Especially, each subject teacher is also the most sincere life skills teacher, who can share with students life skills knowledge that they can practice this summer, such as helping their parents install a light bulb, helping their father fix a broken cabinet door, helping their mother cook a simple meal, cleaning the house themselves... those are the most meaningful "summer exercises", Mr. Dao shared.

Nguyen Phuong Nghi, class 12A7, Dien Hong Secondary and High School, District 10, a city-level literature student, shared: "On May 19, for the first time, I participated in a debate competition - when students not only stood up to speak in front of a crowd about their arguments and viewpoints, but also had to dig deeper into the issue to defend their arguments against the opposition of their other teams. The year-end activity helped students love literature more. I hope this playground will continue in the following school years."

The parent of Ha Anh, a student in grade 4/8 at Kim Dong Primary School in Go Vap District, said: "I am very happy to receive the sharing from the letter my child sent. For my child to have such emotional sharing, it means that my child's soul has been nurtured by the teacher. I would like to thank the teachers who have taught me to grow up more and more."
