ANTD.VN - The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam and the General Administration of Customs of China have just signed a Protocol on plant quarantine requirements for fresh watermelon exported from Vietnam to China.

The signing of the Protocol was carried out within the framework of the state visit to Vietnam by General Secretary andPresident of China Xi Jinping from December 12 to 13.

On December 13, the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said that the signing of the Protocol on watermelon export is an important step in promoting the official export of traditional agricultural products of Vietnam and standardizing regulations on agricultural exports between the two countries.

The Protocol specifies import requirements from China to ensure that fresh watermelons from Vietnam comply with China's laws, regulations and standards related to food hygiene and safety as well as plant quarantine requirements, thereby creating a basis for compliance by Vietnamese production, packaging and export units.

Fresh Vietnamese watermelons are officially exported to China.

According to this Decree, fresh watermelons from Vietnam must not be contaminated with five live plant quarantine species of concern to China, including fruit flies Bactrocera correcta, Bactrocera zonata, Bactrocera latifrons, aphids Phenacoccus solenopsi and bacteria Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli; leaves or soil.

All growing areas and packing facilities for watermelons exported to China must be registered and approved by both the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the General Administration of Customs of China.

The orchard must apply good agricultural practices (GAP), and must ensure supervision of the orchard and the packaging process at the packing facility. The packing facility must establish a traceability system to ensure that fresh watermelons exported to China can be traced back to the coded growing area.

In addition, Vietnamese watermelon shipments will be imported through all Chinese ports permitted by the General Administration of Customs of China to import fruits and must undergo 2% plant quarantine sampling and must comply with China's national food safety standards when imported into the country.

Thus, up to now, Vietnam has exported fruits and agricultural products under the Protocol to China including mangosteen, black jelly, durian, banana, sweet potato, and watermelon.

According to the General Department of Customs, by the end of November 2023, fruit and vegetable exports to China brought Vietnam 3.4 billion USD, an increase of 2.6 times over the same period last year.
