The world's largest game distribution platform Steam has just recorded a new milestone when it reached 41.66 million concurrent users on October 12, the highest number since its launch.
According to Valve statistics, this is a new record for concurrent users (CCU), surpassing the old mark of 2022 and 2023 by more than 10 million people. This achievement shows the enduring appeal of the PC gaming market, in the context of many new gaming platforms and services are fiercely competing.
Despite the surge in players, this is not an unusual phenomenon. Tens of millions of gamers log into Steam every day to play games or simply keep their devices online. However, observers say the spike may be due to a series of notable events and releases in recent times such as Battlefield 6, Hollow Knight: Silksong and the Steam Next Fest program, where players can experience demos of hundreds of upcoming games.
Despite the new games grabbing the spotlight, Steam's most-played games chart is still dominated by longtime free-to-play titles like Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and PUBG: Battlegrounds. Battlefield 6 is currently in third place, while Banan, Bongo Cat, Delta Force, Marvel Rivals, and Warframe also make the top 10.
Steam's achievements once again confirm the platform's near-monopoly in the PC gaming space. Besides Steam, other platforms such as Epic Games Store, Xbox or Roblox are also expanding, but cannot compare in scale and influence. With a massive game library, including blockbusters and indie games, Steam is still the central choice of the global gaming community.
Even giants like Microsoft, EA, and Ubisoft release their games on Steam, while still maintaining their own platforms. Microsoft has even integrated the Steam library directly into the Xbox app on PC, allowing users to access it more easily. This is considered a step to strengthen the multi-platform gaming ecosystem.
If the current growth momentum continues, analysts believe that Steam could soon reach 50 million concurrent users in the near future. The new record marks a milestone in the number of players, proving the vitality of the PC gaming market, where Steam is still the center of the entire ecosystem.
