Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent disease. However, many people are still indifferent to vaccination and do not fully understand the effectiveness of vaccines.

Long-term consequences for the future

Many patients being treated for meningococcal meningitis at the National Children's Hospital have not been vaccinated. Some children have suffered serious complications from chickenpox because they have not been vaccinated.

Measles and whooping cough epidemics were thought to be under control, but recently they have shown signs of returning due to vaccination gaps. Specifically, whooping cough, after many years of control, is now returning with a high rate of patients.

In late March 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned of a resurgence of measles. Accordingly, in the Western Pacific region, the number of measles cases increased by 255% from 2022 to 2023.

According to WHO, in Vietnam, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the disruption of vaccine supply in the Expanded Immunization Program in 2023 has affected the vaccination rate for children nationwide.

Many children have not been vaccinated on schedule or have not received enough doses of vaccines in recent years, which is a risk for disease outbreaks, including measles.

Worldwide , WHO estimates that over 3 million people die each year, but thanks to the introduction of vaccines, millions of lives have been saved.

The Safpo/Potec vaccination system is a trusted vaccination address for people across the country. The number of people vaccinated increases rapidly every year, which is the clearest proof of people's trust in the vaccination services of this brand.

The anti-vaccination movement is a giant obstacle in the way, threatening to re-emerge diseases that were thought to be extinct, but that could have been prevented.

Anti-vaxxers do not fully understand the benefits of vaccination, they only hear rumors or look at a few small incidents. That is why WHO lists anti-vaccination movement as a new global health threat.

In Vietnam, according to Dr. Bui Thi Viet Hoa, consultant for the Safpo/Potec vaccination department, vaccination not only helps protect a specific individual, but also helps prevent disease for the entire community.

The effectiveness of vaccines is undeniable. This is considered the most effective disease prevention measure to protect the health of vaccinated people and avoid major epidemics that affect the health and lives of the community.

WHO estimates that 85-95% of vaccinated people will develop specific immunity to protect their bodies from getting sick, dying or suffering from complications caused by the disease.

Thanks to vaccines, every year, about 2.5 million children around the world are saved from the risk of death due to infectious diseases. Currently, there are vaccines to prevent 30 infectious diseases and about 190 countries and territories have implemented universal vaccination programs for all people.

These figures show the benefits of vaccines to society. According to the WHO, vaccines can help thousands of people avoid disability, save millions of lives worldwide, and save billions of dollars in medical treatment costs each year.

Many studies have shown that the financial burden of medical treatment has a significant impact on each family and society.

When people are fully vaccinated, it will create a healthy community, reduce illness, and reduce the cost of medical examination and treatment over a long period of time. This will reduce the enormous burden on health care, helping to stabilize and improve the quality of life. According to the US Institute of Medicine, for every $1 spent on measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, $21 in health care will be saved.

Take the flu vaccine, for example. Flu vaccination has been shown to be highly effective in adults. It is estimated that the 1.8 billion doses of flu vaccine administered worldwide have prevented 37 million cases of flu, 476,000 hospitalizations, and 67,000 deaths.

In healthy adults aged 18 to 60 years, influenza vaccination reduced cold symptoms by up to 74% and reduced influenza complications (bronchitis, pneumonia) by up to 40%. In older adults (over 60 years), the influenza vaccine group had a relative reduction in influenza-like illness and influenza hospitalizations of 56% and 69%, respectively.

In pregnant women, influenza vaccination reduces influenza infections in newborns by 63% and severe respiratory illness in newborns and mothers by 36%.

In people with chronic underlying diseases, influenza vaccine reduces the frequency of influenza-related acute respiratory illness in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by 76.3%; reduces cardiovascular events by 70% in patients with acute coronary artery disease; reduces the rate of hospitalization and death in diabetic patients by 50%; reduces the risk of cerebral infarction by 55% when vaccinated with influenza vaccine in the first year compared to the previous year without vaccination...

The effectiveness of the flu vaccine is not only a matter of statistics, but has been experienced and evaluated by many people. Talking to reporters of Dau Tu Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Trong Nhan (Hanoi) happily said that in recent years, he and his family have been vaccinated against the flu and have seen truly remarkable results.

According to the Department of Preventive Medicine (Ministry of Health), in recent times, Vietnam has controlled many dangerous epidemics such as tuberculosis, measles, diphtheria, whooping cough, neonatal tetanus, polio, Japanese encephalitis B, etc. The incidence and mortality rates due to these diseases in our country have decreased from hundreds to thousands of times compared to before the Expanded Immunization Program.

Vaccination helps children grow up healthy, reduces illness, reduces the cost of medical examination and treatment throughout their lives; reduces the time and effort of families, especially women, who do not have to take care of sick children; reduces disability, sequelae, or loss of ability to work due to illness.

If children are not vaccinated, or are not fully vaccinated, or are vaccinated late, according to Mr. Tran Dac Phu, former Director of the Department of Preventive Medicine, it will lead to a high risk of getting sick, due to lack of protective immunity.

In fact, there have been many cases where serious epidemics such as measles, whooping cough, diphtheria, Japanese encephalitis, etc. have occurred in places and regions with low vaccination rates, taking the lives of many people, especially children.

The most effective disease prevention measures

Mr. Tran Dac Phu also expressed concern that every time a post-vaccination accident occurs, even if it may be due to objective reasons, the trend of boycotting vaccines will arise. However, if you witness young children lying motionless due to an epidemic because their parents forget or do not care about vaccinating their children, then you will see how serious the consequences are.

Medicine is increasingly developing with many highly effective vaccines to prevent infectious diseases. Doctor Nguyen Tuan Hai, vaccination specialist of Safpo/Potec System, shared that many people think that vaccination is only for children, but this is not true. "For adults, vaccination is also very important to protect health and avoid many dangerous diseases," said Doctor Nguyen Tuan Hai.

Adults need to receive multiple vaccines to protect themselves against infectious diseases for which they have not developed immunity. In addition, booster shots are also needed for some childhood vaccines, such as those for whooping cough, tetanus, and hepatitis B, as the protective effectiveness of these vaccines decreases over time.

Previously, there were not many vaccines for adults on the market because manufacturers did not pay attention to disease prevention for adults. But now, in Vietnam, there are many new vaccines for adults such as vaccines against pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia caused by pneumococcus; vaccines against pericarditis and pneumonia caused by meningococcus; vaccines against cervical cancer; vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough; vaccines against hepatitis A and hepatitis B; vaccines against measles, mumps, and rubella; and vaccines against chickenpox.

Sharing the same view, according to Dr. Le Viet Hoa, consultant of Safpo/Potec vaccination system, vaccination for children and adults is really necessary. Safpo/Potec vaccination room fully meets the technical requirements for a modern vaccination room.

Through observation, the reporter noticed that the vaccination room here is scientifically arranged, and the work of guiding and welcoming people to get vaccinated is carried out methodically.

Accordingly, when arriving at the Safpo/Potec system nationwide, after completing the registration procedures, people will wait outside to receive a queue number for screening by experienced doctors.

People will be thoroughly examined for their medical history, vaccination schedule and health problems to receive appropriate advice. The doctor who examines, advises and prescribes vaccination will measure temperature, heart rate, check lungs and ask the person receiving the vaccination some issues related to health status such as medical history, history of drug/food allergies, current medications, recently vaccinated vaccines, post-vaccination reactions experienced in previous vaccinations... After that, the screening doctor will make a conclusion and prescribe appropriate vaccination.

All screening results should be stored after each examination for ready reference when necessary. The screening process should be conducted in a closed, scientific manner to ensure effectiveness, and the vaccinated person also saves a lot of waiting time.

If the health is guaranteed and the vaccination conditions are met, the person will move to the vaccination room next door to receive the vaccination. Before the vaccination, the medical staff will provide full information about the vaccine to be injected, the vaccine name, manufacturer and expiry date so that the person can understand clearly. After the vaccination is completed, the vaccination room has a designed space for adults to rest and children to play.

To ensure safety after vaccination, according to doctors, people need to stay at the vaccination facility for at least 30 minutes to monitor for unusual signs. If there are post-vaccination reactions such as vomiting, dizziness, red skin, wheezing, medical staff should be notified immediately for timely treatment.

After 30 minutes of monitoring at the vaccination facility, the vaccinated person will have their temperature and injection site checked and will be advised to continue monitoring their health for 48 hours after the injection. If there are any unusual signs of body temperature, breathing, circulation, digestion or health abnormalities that affect eating and sleeping, they should go to the nearest medical facility for timely treatment.
