Journalism at sea

“No matter how stormy the waves, we soldiers on the offshore platforms are there. No matter how precarious the conditions, the soldiers on the offshore platforms are not afraid of storms…”, “As long as there are people, there will be offshore platforms”… These lyrics, melodies, and oaths of the naval soldiers will forever be etched in the hearts of journalists who have had the good fortune to set foot on the sacred seas and islands of our homeland.

Journalists working at the DK1/21 platform during a visit to extend New Year greetings to the officers and soldiers on the platform on the occasion of the Year of the Snake 2025 by the Command of Naval Region 2.

Working amidst the vast ocean, despite the precarious conditions and exhaustion caused by the waves and wind, these "soldiers on the cultural and ideological front" become even more enthusiastic and passionate. Because every news item, every article they write is a message about their love for the sea and islands – a sacred and inseparable part of the homeland.

Excluding his assignments to the southwestern islands of the country, reporter Nguyen Xuan Tiep ( Dong Nai Radio and Television Station) has had the opportunity to visit Truong Sa island district three times.

Xuan Tiep shared: "Visiting Truong Sa once made me love my country even more. I've had the opportunity to work in Truong Sa three times, and I'm sure my love for my country has grown many times stronger."

The "many times greater" that Mr. Xuan Tiep shared is not an exaggeration. Journalists who have personally braved the storms and witnessed firsthand the steadfast soldiers holding their ground at the forefront, firmly holding their weapons to protect the sacred sovereignty of the Fatherland, can certainly understand Mr. Xuan Tiep's sentiment.

As a military and defense reporter, journalist Cù Thị Thuận (from Đồng Nai Newspaper) has had many opportunities to interact and work with the naval forces. However, her trips to the sea, to Trường Sa, Hoàng Sa, and the DK1 platform, always bring her immense happiness.

Ms. Cu Thi Thuan shared: "These business trips help me to better understand, appreciate, and empathize with the difficulties and sacrifices of the forces performing duties on the islands and seas, including naval soldiers, coast guard officers, and fisheries inspectors."

Journalist Le Minh Tuan (Lai Chau Radio and Television Station) shared that he had applied many times but only got to participate in reporting with the delegation visiting the DK1 platform during Tet (Lunar New Year) in early 2025. He was very excited and looking forward to the trip. He tried his best to overcome seasickness to capture as many authentic images as possible of the delegation's activities and the soldiers on the DK1 platform.

Joining journalist Minh Tuan on the trip, journalist Dang Thu Hang (Vinh Phuc Newspaper) had prepared very carefully with motion sickness medication and supplements, but nothing worked; for many days, she was practically bedridden and unable to get up. Nevertheless, she still listened to and followed the activities of the delegation through the ship's loudspeaker. Whenever an idea for an article came to her, she would force herself to get up and take notes. Despite her exhaustion, she still mustered her spirits to set foot on the offshore platform, to meet and interview the soldiers stationed there.

Lieutenant Colonel Pham Quang Tien (reporter for the Vietnam Navy Newspaper) has been involved in journalism for 15 years. On average, he makes 3-5 assignments at sea each year. Having spent so much time at sea, he's become accustomed to rough seas, but even then, this "sea and island journalist" still gets seasick when faced with sudden, large waves. In such situations, it is his determination and willpower that helps him and his colleagues overcome difficulties and complete their missions.

During his 15 years of service, Lieutenant Colonel Pham Quang Tien has had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with many colleagues from media agencies across the country. His impression of his colleagues is their spirit of mutual support and assistance; their willingness to share experiences and personal materials with each other. This is because they all share the common goal of spreading love for the sea and islands, for the naval soldiers, and contributing to the firm protection of the sacred sovereignty of the Fatherland's sea and islands.
