The Central Committee of the Vietnam Student Union believes that today's generation of students are not only academically excellent and creative, but also responsible digital citizens who know how to protect themselves from risks and spread positive habits to the community. This is also how they contribute to the sustainable development of the country in the era of integration and digital transformation.

Speaking at the press conference, Mr. Le Tuan Anh, Member of the Secretariat and Chief of the Central Office of the Vietnam Student Association, said that the seminar "Protecting Personal Finances - Mastering Money" was a truly meaningful activity, organized at the right time, meeting the right needs, and related to practical issues in the lives of students today.

“With the responsibility of supporting students, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Student Union identifies equipping them with personal financial management skills and protecting their finances in cyberspace as one of the essential tools. Because financial management is not just about daily spending, but is a fundamental ability for each student to mature, integrate, and establish themselves and their careers. A student who knows how to spend wisely, save, and invest in their studies and social experiences is laying the first bricks for a sustainable career in the future,” said Le Tuan Anh.

Report: Saving money and knowing when to 'stop'

During the discussion, Le Gia Bao, a student from the K68 Finance and Banking class, shared that besides family support, he also has other sources of income from part-time work. One of his methods for managing and accumulating finances is saving, which has helped him avoid running out of money.

Every month, Le Gia Bao always determines his spending and identifies his biggest and most essential needs. From there, when he receives his salary and other income, he allocates funds specifically for necessary expenses, and saves the rest.

According to Le Gia Bao, to master and manage one's finances well, it is necessary to know one's truly essential needs and know when to stop before indulging in desires.

Pham Thi Thuy Duong, a Top 5 finalist in Miss Vietnam 2024, also expressed agreement with Le Gia Bao's perspective on saving money. "Saving is the best way to avoid risks and prepare for unforeseen circumstances," Thuy Duong said.

Report: It's important to understand yourself and spend appropriately according to your circumstances.

Associate Professor Pham Tien Manh, Deputy Head of the Finance Department at the Banking Academy, emphasized that in personal financial management, people often encounter two situations: having too little money and having too much money. When money is scarce, investment and consumption opportunities may be missed; but when unexpectedly receiving a large sum (such as winning the lottery, land compensation, etc.), without management skills, many people will fall into wasteful spending, quickly losing everything and leading to negative social consequences.

According to the Deputy Head of the Finance Department at the Banking Academy, the first lesson for students on mastering money is to increase their income, and the most practical way to do this is through part-time work. However, students should choose jobs related to their field of study, helping them accumulate experience for the future, instead of just doing short-term jobs like driving for ride-hailing services.

The next issue is sensible spending. Students need to understand themselves, spend appropriately according to their circumstances, and avoid following friends or acting impulsively. Keeping track of monthly expenses helps avoid falling into a cycle of greed and fear.

In addition, students should develop a saving habit early on. Simply setting aside a small amount each month, transferring it to a savings account or making a safe, long-term investment, will create the necessary reserve fund.

Finally, and most importantly, invest in yourself: study, take courses, and improve your financial literacy and life skills. This is how you create lasting value, helping students build confidence and take control of their future.

Pham Thi Thuy Duong - Miss Tourism and Environment, Top 5 Miss Vietnam 2024, said that from a young age, her parents taught her about the importance of a reserve fund. Therefore, she emphasized the need to balance spending to meet immediate needs while also saving for the future. This fundamental lesson has become a guiding principle for her in developing good personal financial management habits.

In practice, Thuy Duong applies the 50-30-20 formula. According to this, 50% of her income is used for essential needs such as education, food, and transportation; 30% is allocated to hobbies and personal needs to help balance and enjoy life; and the remaining 20% is always set aside for savings or small investments, creating a reserve fund for the future.

The winner of the Tourism and Environment Beauty Contest, a top 5 finalist in Miss Vietnam 2024, shared a seemingly simple but highly effective formula that helps you avoid running out of money at the end of the month and develop a habit of planned spending.

Personal Financial Protection report

At the seminar, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Giang, Deputy Head of Retail Customer Policy Department, Vietnam Foreign Trade Commercial Bank (Vietcombank), shared about the role of banks in supporting young people in protecting their personal finances.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Giang, many people think that economics and financial management skills are quite far removed from their lives, and that only those studying economics need to pay attention to them.

"However, if we use what we have and what we have, and if we know how to manage our finances, we will form a habit for the future. Once we have a principle of managing our finances, we will always be proactive, never passive, and we will never fall into awkward situations," said the Deputy Head of Retail Customer Policy Department, Vietnam Foreign Trade Commercial Bank.

Sharing her thoughts on the role of banking technology in expense management, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Giang emphasized: Currently, banking platforms have integrated all the conveniences and needs of users. These include basic features that allow users to manage all their daily expenses, as well as entertainment and payment needs. Applications offer features such as budget setting, spending alerts, and income and expenditure management.

Sharing his experience in accumulating and increasing wealth, the Deputy Head of Retail Customer Policy at Vietnam Foreign Trade Commercial Bank (Vietcombank) stated that students are in the "most beautiful period of their youth" but also the "poorest" period.

To achieve big future goals like starting a family, buying a house, or studying abroad, saving needs to start now, even with a small amount. Developing habits and skills in managing and investing according to your means will help you achieve your future expectations.

The Deputy Head of Retail Customer Policy at Vietnam Foreign Trade Commercial Bank (Vietcombank) also noted that students should not rush into highly volatile investment channels such as gold, cryptocurrencies, or high-risk stocks without sufficient knowledge. Instead, they should start with small, disciplined, and long-term investments, such as investment funds with expert advisors.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Giang also noted the "golden rules" for safe banking transactions, specifically: Banks never ask you to provide anything through a link. You don't need to fill in anything on a link. Nor do they ever ask you to provide your password or username to log into their application.

Concluding the presentation, the Deputy Head of Retail Customer Policy at Vietnam Foreign Trade Commercial Bank (Vietcombank) sent a message to the young participants: Equipping oneself with skills to protect personal finances and accumulate assets should begin while still in school and be maintained throughout life. With knowledge, we can always proactively manage and protect our assets.

The current state of online fraud largely originates from criminal networks and organizations operating abroad, such as in Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and the Middle East. Once money is transferred to their accounts, it is almost immediately withdrawn, making recovery very difficult. After being scammed once, many perpetrators even fabricate a "help get your money back" scenario to continue their fraudulent activities.

Vietnamese police have made efforts and successfully apprehended Vietnamese nationals who committed crimes abroad on numerous occasions. In particular, on October 25-26, Vietnam will host the signing of the Hanoi Convention on Cybercrime Prevention and Control – a United Nations convention in this field, named after a Vietnamese location, a great source of national pride.

Answering questions from students at the seminar, Colonel, Dr. Nguyen Hong Quan said: Scamming calls and fraudulent schemes are constantly occurring. Everyone needs to be vigilant against seemingly windfalls.

The Director of the Training Center, Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (A05), Ministry of Public Security, also asked: "Has anyone ever received a scam call?" Many students in the auditorium raised their hands.

Next, Colonel, Dr. Nguyen Hong Quan asked, "Is there anyone here who has been a victim of fraud?" No hands were raised.

The Director of the Training Center, Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (A05), Ministry of Public Security, noted: Losing faith in digital transactions and refusing to accept online information is very dangerous. We need to be vigilant and have rules for receiving information. We are not alone; we shouldn't put ourselves in isolation because we have relevant agencies, schools, etc., to handle any situations that arise. This will help ensure students are never scammed.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thanh Huyen - Head of Student Affairs Department, Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Associate Professor Pham Thanh Huyen, Head of Student Affairs at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, shared: Students are inherently intelligent and equipped with a lot of knowledge, but in reality, there have been many cases of fraud with sophisticated methods in recent times.

According to Associate Professor Pham Thanh Huyen, the reason is that some students lack life skills, are naive, gullible, and sometimes immature in handling situations.

A typical example shared by the Head of Student Affairs at Hanoi University of Science and Technology is the case of a newly enrolled K70 student. Despite repeated warnings from the university against participating in paper-based surveys, the student still participated and subsequently received calls from individuals impersonating authorities, threatening to detain the student and linking them to a scam. When the caller threatened temporary detention, the student's fear caused them to lose vigilance, resulting in the theft of all 6 million VND from their account. Only when the scammer demanded an additional 450 million VND did the student become alert and seek help from the Student Affairs Department.

Based on these incidents, Associate Professor Pham Thanh Huyen emphasized that students need to cultivate resilience. "If you haven't done anything wrong, there's nothing to fear. When threatened online, you need to remain calm and immediately contact the university or the nearest police station. The Student Affairs Department is committed to supporting students 24/7," Associate Professor Pham Thanh Huyen said.

"On the university's part, many solutions have been implemented to limit fraud. Warning information is regularly updated on the student portal, website, email, and official fanpage. At the same time, right from the beginning of the academic year, Hanoi University of Science and Technology also invited the police to exchange information and equip students with knowledge on risk prevention," emphasized the Head of Student Affairs, Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Report: AI is being exploited by criminals for online fraud.

Le Tuan Kiet, a student at the University of Technology (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), shared: Currently, large corporations are developing artificial intelligence, especially generative AI models, which can mimic voices and faces for various purposes, including being exploited by criminals for online fraud.

However, alongside this, AI is also being applied to protect users. On platforms like YouTube and TikTok, several verification and recognition algorithms have been implemented to limit the spread of fake content. Many banks around the world are also applying AI technology to detect unusual transactions, promptly warn customers, and help protect their rights.

"If users lack understanding of technology and social media, the risk of being scammed is very high, so they need to proactively equip themselves with knowledge and increase their vigilance in every online activity," said student Le Tuan Kiet.

Report: Fear and Greed

Colonel, Dr. Nguyen Hong Quan - Director of the Training Center, Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (A05), Ministry of Public Security

Colonel, Dr. Nguyen Hong Quan - Director of the Training Center, Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (A05), Ministry of Public Security, stated: Fraudulent schemes in cyberspace are extremely diverse, multifaceted, and increasingly sophisticated. Among them, a form of fraud preys on our instincts: fear and greed.

Students and young people in general always have a need for part-time work, creating a legitimate need, so scammers try to lure students into participating in simple tasks like liking or sharing a post. There have been cases where people have been scammed out of billions of dong.

In addition, the perpetrators focused on constructing scenarios involving emotional relationships and financial investments. They exploited fear through threats related to legal consequences.

"To combat fraud, everyone must inject themselves with doses of 'vaccine' through seminars like today's, to enhance their understanding and thereby overcome fear and greed," emphasized Colonel, Dr. Nguyen Hong Quan.
