After participating in Vietnamese Family Home twice as a guest, actress Lam Vy Da appeared on the show for the third time but with a new mission, as the MC of the show. Lam Vy Da said she was extremely excited and emotional when she had the opportunity to host a meaningful program like Vietnamese Family Home. For her, being able to connect and accompany children in difficult circumstances in the show is a happiness that is hard to describe. In addition, runner-up Ha Thu and photographer Thien Minh also appeared in episode 136 this week as guests.
Thien Minh said that his participation in Vietnamese Family Home was a beautiful opportunity. As someone who loves programs with community values, he has shared stories from the program many times on social media and expressed his desire to participate. When he received the invitation from the crew, he proactively arranged his schedule to accompany the program, especially when returning to the West.
Runner-up Ha Thu was moved to return to the program after three years. Last time, she helped a 12th grader who could not continue his studies due to difficult circumstances. Currently, the student is a second-year student at Saigon University, nurturing the dream of becoming a Physics teacher. “That is a great motivation for me to continue accompanying the program, bringing more meaningful gifts,” she shared.
Participating in episode 136 of Vietnamese Family Home , the artists could not hide their emotions when witnessing the situations of the characters. Phan Nguyen Duc Dung (2009), 8th grade student, Luong Nghia Secondary School, Long My District, Hau Giang Province. Duc Dung is living with his mother and uncle in an old house left by his grandparents. Since childhood, he did not know who his father was, and for him, his mother is his only support.
Duc Dung's mother is 61 years old this year, earning a living by weaving water hyacinth for hire, earning 5,000 VND for each finished product. Every day, she only earns about 50,000 VND, not enough to cover daily living expenses. Duc Dung's uncle is over 60 years old, has no family and lives by driving a motorbike taxi, earning just enough to take care of his own life.
Not only has Duc Dung lacked fatherly love since birth, but he has also had to fight diabetes insipidus since he was 8 years old. This chronic disease has greatly affected his daily life. Although he is only a teenager, Duc Dung has had to take medication for many years to prevent his condition from getting worse. There were months when he had to go to the emergency room and stay in the hospital for long periods of time. Every month, his family has to spend about 800,000 VND on medication, this amount of money is always a constant worry for both mother and son.
Not only is Duc Dung sick, but his mother's health is also not good. Duc Dung's mother has breast cancer and had both breasts removed within a few years. To have money to treat both mother and child, the family borrowed 50 million VND and borrowed 80 million VND from neighbors. Due to illness and family circumstances, Duc Dung had to drop out of school twice. Therefore, he is currently very afraid that one day he will have to drop out of school again. Although it is difficult, he really wants to go to school like his friends. To have money, Duc Dung also weaves water hyacinths or helps his mother with housework. The burden of illness, debt and living expenses makes the life of the 3 members in the small house always precarious.
White rice and boiled vegetables are not enough nutrients for Duc Dung and her child to fight against terrible diseases.
Although the path of learning is not smooth, Duc Dung is always diligent and tries to study. Because she understands that only studying can help her escape the current difficulties. Duc Dung loves her mother very much, she wants to grow up quickly to go to work to earn money to take care of her mother. What she worries about most right now is her mother's health, she is afraid that one day she will die, leaving her alone, without a place to rely on.
Faced with Duc Dung's difficult situation, runner-up Ha Thu could not hide her emotions. She continuously wiped away her tears at the heartbreaking situation of the 8th grade boy who had to fight with illness, living with his mother who had cancer and his old brother in a small, dilapidated house. When hearing that Dung had dropped out of school twice due to illness and difficult circumstances, Ha Thu squeezed his hand tightly, her eyes filled with love. She shared that she was heartbroken to see a child carrying so many burdens, but still not giving up on his dream of studying and his desire to repay his mother.
Photographer Thien Minh could not hold back his emotions when he witnessed Duc Dung's situation. He was silent for a long time, speechless when he learned that she had been suffering from a chronic illness since childhood, spending nearly one million VND per month on medicine, an amount too large for the family's current situation. When he saw the water hyacinths that she had helped her mother with, filling the corner of the house, Thien Minh burst into tears. He shared that although he was an artist and had been through many difficult areas, he still could not help but feel heartbroken by Duc Dung's story.
Another situation that also brought tears to the audience was that of Tran Thi Tuyet Nhan (2009), who is living with her younger brother Tran Minh Nhut (2010) in Go Quao district, Kien Giang province. Tuyet Nhan's parents both died in a traffic accident. Since then, Nhan and her younger brother have become orphans, relying on each other to live under the protection and care of their grandparents and relatives.
Tuyet Nhan is in 10th grade at Chiem Thanh Tan High School, while her younger brother is in 9th grade at Vinh Hoa Hung Nam Middle School. After their parents passed away, the two sisters still live in the old house left by their parents to take care of the incense offerings for their parents, and do not want to leave the warm memories of their family. Only after school, Nhan and her younger brother go to their grandparents' house to eat, live, then return home to clean, study and rest. The house the two sisters are living in is currently in serious disrepair, the roof leaks in many places during the rainy season. Nhan only hopes to have some money to repair the house, so that the rain does not leak onto the altar of their parents anymore.
Despite the difficulties, Tuyet Nhan and her younger brother both study hard. Both are very good students, so a benefactor supports them with 2 million VND/month to cover their living expenses and continue to go to school. Being a sensible child, Tuyet Nhan also takes advantage of the summer months to apply for a job at a seafood company with an income of 3 million VND/month to save up for living expenses as well as to buy school supplies. Until now, Tuyet Nhan still holds on to her dream of becoming a teacher to spread knowledge to children in difficult circumstances like herself. As for Nhut, he wants to become a police officer to help the country.
Tuyet Nhan's maternal grandparents are both over 70 years old, in poor health and only stay home to farm. In addition, Nhan has 2 aunts and 1 paternal uncle living with her grandparents. All of them are self-employed so their income is unstable. The family's income mainly depends on the grandparents' 6 hectares of rice fields, which are harvested twice a year but are only enough to eat for the year.
The sudden passing of their parents was something Tuyet Nhan and her sister could not accept. Until now, she still often goes to the place where her parents had the accident and remembers them. When mentioning her parents, Tuyet Nhan cries a lot. She always regrets that there are still many things she has not said or done for her parents.
During the recording, many people could not hide their sadness when Tuyet Nhan mentioned her mother's last keepsake. That keepsake was not a gift or clothes, but simply a 10,000 VND bill that her mother gave her to buy snacks. To her, that was the most meaningful and closest keepsake she received before her mother passed away.
Tuyet Nhan shared: “That money is priceless to me, because it is the last gift my mother left me. No matter what happens in the future, I will not use this money .” Up to now, Nhan still keeps that money and considers it a beautiful memory of her mother and family because she knows that, forever after, she will not be able to receive another gift from her parents.
The special keepsake and the confessions of the 16-year-old girl who suddenly lost both her parents made MC Lam Vy Da and runner-up Ha Thu burst into tears. MC Lam Vy Da choked up as she hugged her and said: “That was a huge shock. I lost my mother at the age of 18, so I understand the feeling of not having relatives by my side.” Lam Vy Da comforted her : “Life has inevitable losses. But you should live well and be happy, because you are the greatest support for your grandparents and younger brother.”
Ha Thu also could not hold back her tears when sharing with Tuyet Nhan: “Even though I grew up in a family full of love, I still feel Nhan’s pain from the bottom of my heart. Losing parents at this age is too great a shock.”
Photographer Thien Minh was speechless when he saw the situation of the two sisters. He choked up and said that everyone has to go through this pain, he himself had also gone through it so he deeply understood the feeling of loss. “I couldn’t bear to hear that the two sisters no longer had both their parents. They are really too strong, the little brother already knows how to work extra to help his sister…”, he expressed his emotions.
