Promoting gender equality in Jiangcheng

Amidst the peaceful scenery of Giang Thanh border commune lie profound changes, as Khmer women are increasingly confident in protecting themselves and their children. These changes stem from the persistent efforts of the Women's Union of the commune in implementing gender equality projects and addressing pressing issues for women and children.

In mid-November, at the Ta Teng hamlet headquarters, a presentation on gender equality and addressing pressing issues for women and children took place in a relaxed yet lively atmosphere. Over 180 members, women, and influential figures from the ethnic minority community attended. The Giang Thanh Commune Women's Union provided quick updates on the Marriage and Family Law, the Gender Equality Law, and the consequences of child marriage and consanguineous marriage. Ms. Thi Vi, Head of the Ta Teng Hamlet Women's Union, shared: “Khmer women are hardworking and resilient, but they face many disadvantages. Initially, it was very difficult to persuade them to attend the presentation; they were hesitant and afraid. But after hearing relatable stories and seeing themselves in them, they understood that gender equality is not a distant concept but a right everyone deserves.”

In 2025, the Women's Union of the commune organized six direct communication sessions on gender equality, prevention and control of domestic violence, child protection, and the elimination of outdated customs. Thanks to the perseverance of the union's officials and core communicators, the awareness of Khmer women gradually changed. Many women, for the first time, dared to stand before a crowd to share family matters, child-rearing experiences, or anxieties about experiencing emotional abuse that they previously thought they had to "endure to keep the peace at home." Ms. Thi Thi, residing in Ta Teng hamlet, said: "Thanks to participating in the communication session, I learned that women have the right to be respected, the right to express their opinions. As a result, we can discuss household matters, children, and business together, and it's much more enjoyable than before."

The "Community Trust Address" model has been effectively maintained over the years. It's a place where women facing difficulties, experiencing domestic violence, or children needing urgent support can turn to at any time. Elderly people and respected figures within the Khmer community become "eyes and ears – a support system" to identify, mobilize, and assist vulnerable women. To ensure the law truly enters daily life, the Women's Union of the commune organized a competition to learn about the Law on Gender Equality, the Law on Prevention and Control of Domestic Violence, and the Law on Marriage and Family, combined with learning about the Union's resolution for the 2025-2030 term. The joyful laughter of the women, interspersed with friendly questions and answers, made the competition a beneficial activity, helping women understand the law easily and remember it for a long time.

The Women's Union of Giang Thanh commune also helps its members and women develop their economy through entrusted capital from the Social Policy Bank. In 2025, 250 households received loans totaling 3.5 billion VND to invest in production, livestock farming, and crop cultivation. To date, the union manages over 95 billion VND in entrusted capital, with 1,350 members. This has become an important resource helping women in border areas stabilize their economy and escape poverty sustainably. Ms. Ly Phol Ly - President of the Women's Union of Giang Thanh commune shared: “The most valuable thing is the change from the women themselves. When they are confident, they will protect themselves and their families. We believe that working on gender equality requires perseverance, closeness to the people, and speaking through real stories. When women in border areas are strong, the border will be secure.”

Khmer women are gradually breaking free from old barriers, daring to think, speak, and change. Communication sessions, support models, and loan programs are accompanying them, opening up a brighter future for themselves and their children. “Building on the achievements, in the coming time, the Women's Union of the commune will continue to promote communication, replicate effective models, and closely coordinate with relevant departments and organizations to effectively implement the project's goals, following the motto: No gender stereotypes, no child marriage; women and children are protected, cared for, and developed comprehensively,” said Ms. Ly Phol Ly.

Local Party committees and authorities pay attention to training and developing female cadres. The Giang Thanh Commune Party Committee currently has 9 female members, accounting for 33.3%; female representatives in the Commune People's Council account for 36%.
