These days, coming to Krang Go 2 village, Quang Lap commune, Don Duong district, from early morning, people are seen bustling in the garden. Floating in the green of the trees and leaves under the light, cold drizzle, flower farmers are bent over their chrysanthemum pots. Starting from a few groups of households, then the whole village and this place is gradually forming a potted chrysanthemum village specializing in serving the Tet market.
Early in the morning, people take the time to go to the garden to water the flowers. |
Chrysanthemum village Krăng Gọ 2 is nestled among the vegetable fields of Quảng Lập commune. There are currently about 20 households growing potted chrysanthemums for Tet. All of them are originally from Nghĩa Hiệp commune (Tu Nghĩa district, one of the places famous for growing potted chrysanthemums in Quảng Ngãi province) and moved here to live.
This year, Mr. Nguyen Ba Dung's family planted more than 4,000 chrysanthemum pots, with pot diameters ranging from 40 - 90 cm; in addition, his family also planted more than 2,000 chrysanthemum pots to serve people to place on family altars or on graves.
Mr. Dung shared that many people think that chrysanthemum is a flower of separation, but that is not true. It originates from Japan and China, always associated with Eastern culture, is a symbol of nobility, longevity and maternal love. Therefore, people worship ancestors or put chrysanthemums in vases to show filial piety to parents and grandparents. Chrysanthemums have a bright yellow color, also bring luck to the homeowner, especially on the first day of spring.

Mr. Dung added that when he was in Quang Ngai, most families liked to buy pots of chrysanthemums to display in front of their houses. It was also a wish for good luck for the family. Therefore, when he arrived in Don Duong, he and many families in the village wanted to redevelop the profession of growing potted chrysanthemums for Tet here.
To prepare for the Tet flower season, starting from the seventh lunar month every year, people in the village are busy clearing the lagim garden (growing short-term vegetables) to make pots and plant flowers. In November, people cut off the electricity, move on to the stage of pruning branches and picking buds so that the flowers bloom evenly and beautifully.
This year the weather is favorable so flower care for gardeners is also more convenient. |
Currently, more than 2,000 large pots of chrysanthemums of Mr. Dung's family have been reserved by traders from other provinces. The remaining number is expected to be purchased by traders from now until December 15.
Not far away, the extended family of old farmer Pham Van Tuan (70 years old) is also busy picking buds and taking care of 10,000 pots of Tet chrysanthemums. Mr. Tuan said that this year, the weather is quite favorable so the chrysanthemums grow well, the buds are even, and there is little damage. Besides, the consumption is also quite favorable. At this time, many traders have come to visit the gardens to choose flowers and deposit money. Many gardens with beautiful flowers have been fully booked by traders.
To have a beautiful flower pot with big, even flowers, you need to trim the small buds around so that the plant can concentrate nutrients to nourish the main buds. |
According to Mr. Tuan, compared to about 3 years ago, growing Tet potted chrysanthemums is no longer profitable. The reason is that the cost of labor, fertilizers, and pesticides has increased compared to previous years, but the selling price has not increased much. Even so, farmers still make a profit of about 30% of the total revenue, so people in the village are still very interested in this traditional profession.
To have flower pots blooming in time for Tet, it requires meticulous and skillful manual care. In case of cold weather, it is necessary to use lights to keep the flowers warm. Especially, when the flowers bloom, to have a pot of beautiful colored flowers, large and even flowers, it is necessary to trim the small buds around so that the plant can concentrate nutrients to nourish the main buds.
Old farmer Pham Van Tuan is happy that this year the weather is favorable, the flowers are beautiful and traders have placed early deposits. |
Of the total 10,000 chrysanthemum pots prepared for this year's Tet flower crop, Mr. Tuan's family grows 60% of the small pots, priced from 120,000 - 250,000 VND/pot; followed by the types priced from 300,000 - 500,000 VND/pot; the type 1 pot with a diameter of 90cm costs up to 1 million VND/pot, of which he has prepared more than 100 pots. It is expected that after deducting expenses, Mr. Tuan's family can earn more than 600 million VND in this Tet flower crop.

Previously, flower growers mainly grew flowers on a small scale to earn extra income at the end of the year. Over time, realizing the high economic efficiency of growing chrysanthemums in pots, the number of flower growers in the area increased. This is also the main source of income for many families with profits of hundreds of millions of dong each year.
With many years of experience in growing flowers and beautiful flower quality, the flower products at the potted chrysanthemum village of Krăng Gọ 2 are very popular in the market. Currently, local flowers are consumed not only in the province but also transported to other provinces in the Southern region such as Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong , Dong Nai...
