People of My Phong flower village are busy preparing to plant flowers for Tet. |
My Phong flower village is the largest flower growing area in the old Tien Giang province (now Dong Thap province). This is a traditional profession with hundreds of households producing and supplying Tet flowers to many provinces and cities in the region. After merging My Phong commune with Tan My Chanh commune and Ward 9 into My Phong ward, the scale of the flower village was also expanded.
According to records, at this time, flower farmers are busy taking care of and preparing to plant flowers for Tet. Mr. Nguyen Van Bay (residing in My Hoa quarter, My Phong ward) has nearly 20 years of experience in growing flowers for Tet, and has sown more than 400 baskets of raspberry chrysanthemums.
Mr. Bay shared: “My hundreds of pots of raspberry chrysanthemums are growing well. In the past few days, I have focused on weeding, clearing the land and preparing materials to continue planting flowers. In about 20 days, I will plant more than 1,200 pots of Dutch chrysanthemums and in the 10th lunar month, I will plant about 500 pots of marigolds. In general, in recent years, the price of input materials has increased, but the selling price of Tet flowers has not increased, so farmers mainly make a profit by working.”

Also in My Hoa quarter, My Phong ward, Mr. Tran Van Tung's family has gathered materials at the flower field. In recent days, he has hired workers to put rice husk ash into pots to prepare for planting Tet flowers. Mr. Tung shared: "In about half a month, I will plant Dutch chrysanthemums. This year, I plan to plant about 4,000 pots of various flowers. Hopefully, this year's Tet flower crop will have a good price so that people can make a profit."
This year, Mr. Truong Vinh Phat's family (My Phong ward) continues to choose to grow raspberry chrysanthemums using tissue culture. Mr. Phat shared: "This year, I plan to plant about 15,000 baskets of Tet flowers of all kinds, including about 8,000 pots of raspberry chrysanthemums. In addition to raspberry chrysanthemums as the main product, I focus on planting other types of flowers such as Thai chrysanthemums, Japanese chrysanthemums, Japanese gerbera chrysanthemums, and dwarf sunflowers. Because according to observations from last year, compared to other flower varieties, these flower varieties sell better."
Mr. Pham Thanh Long (My Phong ward) is also a veteran flower grower in My Phong flower village, busy planting Tet flowers. Up to this point, his family has planted 1,500 pots of Korean raspberry chrysanthemums. Mr. Long shared: “This year, my family planted about 6,000 pots of Tet flowers. In the coming time, I will focus on planting flower varieties such as: Dutch chrysanthemums, crystal chrysanthemums, gerberas, marigolds...
In about a week, I will plant another 1,000 pots of Dutch chrysanthemums. This year, fertilizers, rice husk ash, coconut fiber... have all increased in price. Compared to last year, this year, the number of flowers planted has decreased due to increased input costs. Farmers hope that the weather will be favorable, and the Tet flowers will have a price that ensures a profit."
Mr. Truong Van Nhung, Head of the My Phong Ornamental Flower Cooperative, shared: “This year, I grow flowers on a large scale like every year, but I also have Dutch and Korean chrysanthemums with many colors. The recent rainy weather has made the flowers susceptible to diseases, so they have to be treated with chemicals, increasing costs. As for the Spring Flower Market, I suggest it should be held at the same place because the sellers and customers have known each other for many years.”
According to the People's Committee of My Phong Ward, this year's Tet flower crop, farmers in the area plan to plant about 721,000 flower baskets of all kinds. In particular, farmers mainly plant flower varieties such as: 17,000 traditional raspberry chrysanthemums; 44,000 Korean raspberry chrysanthemums; 294,000 Dutch chrysanthemums; 33,000 yellow chrysanthemums; 128,000 carnations; 172,000 marigolds, and other types of flowers such as: Sedum, cockscomb, sunflowers, gerbera, hanging flowers... about 33,000 baskets. In addition, local people also planted more than 24,500 yellow apricot trees, an increase of 214% compared to last year.
Currently, local farmers have registered the number of flower and ornamental plants to sell at the Binh Ngo Spring Flower Market with 335 lots/245 households; including 239 flower lots and 94 yellow apricot lots. Many local flower and ornamental plant growers have proposed to organize a concentrated spring flower market like previous years to facilitate exchange and sale.
Farmers at My Phong Flower Village are constantly developing new flower varieties to meet market demand and expect a good harvest and good price for the upcoming Tet flower season.
