In a written message on Tuesday (May 26) marking the Muslim pilgrimage season of Hajj, Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said that the landscape of the Middle East has changed and that US influence in the region is declining.

"What is certain is that time cannot be turned back. The countries and lands in the region will no longer be a shield for American bases. Washington not only no longer has a safe haven and a place to establish military bases in the region, but is increasingly moving away from its former position," Khamenei emphasized.

The Iranian leader also stated that the Muslim countries in the region have "many common capabilities and interests that will shape the new order," and called on nations to strengthen cooperation to address common challenges.

Khamenei has not appeared in public since taking office in March, after his predecessor, his father Ali Khamenei, was killed in airstrikes carried out by the US and Israel. His recent absence has fueled speculation about his health and whereabouts.

To date, statements attributed to the new supreme leader have primarily been broadcast on Iranian state television in the form of a presenter reading them aloud, rather than appearing in person.

On May 7, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said he had a meeting lasting about two and a half hours with the Supreme Leader.

Three days later, Iranian state media reported that the head of the Iranian army's Central Command, Khatam al-Anbiya, Ali Abdollahi, had also met with Supreme Leader Khamenei to receive "new instructions and guidance" regarding operations against Iran's adversaries.

Iran claims to have shot down a US drone.

In a new development, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Tuesday that it had shot down a US MQ-9 drone in the Persian Gulf region, and also fired on an RQ-4 drone and an F-35 fighter jet that allegedly violated Iranian airspace.

The IRGC stated that its air defense units detected the US military aircraft violating Iranian airspace before opening fire. However, Iran did not specify the exact timing of the incidents.
