On August 1, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced the latest rankings and Grandmaster Le Quang Liem was ranked 15th in the world with an elo coefficient of 2740. The 15th position in the world is the highest position in Le Quang Liem's career so far and this is also the highest ranking that a Vietnamese chess player has achieved in the FIDE rankings. Le Quang Liem's above ranking is considered historic for the Vietnamese chess community.
Last month, Le Quang Liem was ranked 21st. However, after playing effectively at the Biel Festival Chess 2023 in Switzerland and winning the championship, Le Quang Liem accumulated more elo coefficients for himself from 2728 to 2740. In 2017, Le Quang Liem had the highest elo coefficient for himself at 2739.
Le Quang Liem is still a member of the Vietnamese chess team. In recent years, this grandmaster has been working in the US but still regularly competes in tournaments online or in person.
Currently, Le Quang Liem is in Azerbaijan to compete in the 2023 World Chess Cup and will meet Serbian chess player Ivan Ivanisevic in his first match. This tournament will run until August 24.
This year, Le Quang Liem is expected to be a member of the Vietnamese chess team that will compete in the 19th-2022 ASIAD in Hangzhou (China).
