According to The Guardian newspaper, the tragedy occurred at around 6pm (local time) in the city center of Liverpool, where thousands of fans of the "Red Brigade" were gathering to join in the jubilant atmosphere of the Premier League championship trophy procession.
At that moment, a car suddenly plowed into the crowd, sending at least 27 people to the hospital, including four children. One child and one adult were seriously injured. Four people trapped under the car were rescued by firefighters.
British media quoted witnesses as saying the car appeared out of nowhere, climbed onto the sidewalk and plowed straight into a group of Liverpool fans. Reuters added that videos on social media showed many people being thrown into the air by the car.
When the car stopped, many angry fans rushed to the car and smashed the windows but the police intervened to prevent them from approaching the driver.

Police said they had arrested a "53-year-old white male from the Liverpool area" who allegedly drove into a group of Liverpool fans. It is not yet clear what the driver's motive was, but police said they were not treating the incident as "terrorist related".
The incident "cast a dark shadow over what was otherwise a very happy day," Liverpool City Council leader Liam Robinson wrote on social media.
Liverpool FC also posted on X that they were in direct contact with the police. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this serious incident," Liverpool FC wrote.
