(CLO) On March 1, African leaders gathered in Namibia to bid farewell to "founding father" Sam Nujoma - who challenged colonialism and the military occupation of the white minority apartheid government of South Africa.
Among the dignitaries attending the funeral were South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, former President Thabo Mbeki and former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, who paid tribute to Nujoma, who rose from a herd boy to become Namibia's leader on March 21, 1990.

"We fought under his leadership, won the struggle for independence and completely eradicated apartheid from Namibia," said incumbent President Nangolo Mbumba.
Mr Nujoma's coffin, draped in the red, green and blue Namibian flag, was laid to rest at the Heroes' Acre, a North Korean-built monument.
It honors those who fought for Namibia's independence from genocidal German colonial rule, as well as from South African occupation after Germany lost control of the territory during World War I.
Sam Nujoma served as president from 1990 to 2005. He tried to portray himself as a leader with a broad vision, bridging political differences and uniting the nation.
The funeral was held two weeks after his death at the age of 95, attended by a large crowd of people and regional leaders.
Sam Nujoma was the founder and first leader of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), a key force in the fight for Namibia's independence. He spent decades leading the resistance movement against South African rule, including military and diplomatic campaigns to gain international support.
After Namibia gained independence in 1990, Nujoma pushed for reform policies, focusing on education, health and economic development.
Leaders of many countries and international organizations have expressed their condolences over the passing of Sam Nujoma. Political observers believe that his legacy will continue to have a profound impact on Namibian politics as well as the African liberation movement.
