Li-Fi wireless connection is 100 times faster than Wi-Fi

The developer authors emphasize the benefits of using light rather than radio frequencies. Li-Fi offers “faster, more reliable wireless connections with unparalleled security compared to conventional technologies such as Wi-Fi and 5G.”

Despite its promise, Li-Fi is not expected to replace Wi-Fi and 5G solutions, nor wired networks. Radio waves still have a clear advantage in their ability to travel through the atmosphere over long distances and through opaque objects. However, the new technology can be used indoors, offering the highest speeds and lowest latency.

The video shows how Li-Fi can be integrated into a building's lighting system to transmit data. Part of the infrared spectrum is used to transmit data, so people won't see any flickering or anything like that.

Li-Fi speeds are said to reach 224 GB/s. Fraunhofer's Dominik Schulz points out that because Li-Fi operates in a proprietary spectrum, this leads to higher reliability and lower latency.

“Straight-line light transmission improves safety by preventing wall penetration, reducing the risk of interference and eavesdropping, and enabling indoor navigation with centimeter-level accuracy,” says Dominik Schultz.
