The UN expressed concern about the deteriorating situation in Lebanon amid increased Israeli attacks.
Mr. Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, declared that "we do not want to see any ground attacks".
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is “deeply concerned about the humanitarian consequences of the events unfolding in Lebanon,” Dujarric said.
Mr. Dujarric reiterated Mr. Guterres' call for all parties to exercise restraint and reduce tensions, and stressed the need to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
The resolution passed on August 11, 2006 called for a complete ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, establishing a demilitarized zone between the Blue Line dividing the two countries' border and the Litani River, allowing only the Lebanese army and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to possess weapons and military equipment in this area.
The Secretary-General is continuing to seek diplomatic solutions, Mr. Dujarric said.
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health , since September 23, Israel has carried out major airstrikes against Hezbollah targets across Lebanon, killing more than 900 people and injuring more than 2,700 others.
Several Hezbollah commanders were also killed in the Israeli strike, including leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on September 26 that Tel Aviv would only accept a ceasefire in Lebanon if Hezbollah was "pushed" away from the border to the north of the Litani River.
The international community has warned that Israel's attacks in Lebanon could further escalate the conflict in Gaza, leading to conflict across the region.
