Liverpool make strange decision to honor Jota

On the morning of July 12, Liverpool confirmed that they would permanently retire the number 20 shirt in memory of striker Diogo Jota.

After consulting with Jota's wife, Rute, and the 1996-born player's family, Liverpool have decided that from now on, no player will wear the number 20 shirt at any level, from the men's first team to the women's team and the academy. It is the first time in the Merseyside club's history that a shirt number has been retired in honour of a player.

"By retiring this number, we are making it permanent and Diogo will never be forgotten," said Michael Edwards, Fenway Sports Group's chief football officer.

The number 20 will be permanently worn at Anfield.

"Jota brought Liverpool their 20th Premier League title, a special mark associated with his number 20 shirt," Edwards added.

Jota and his brother Andre Silva died in a car accident earlier this week. The tragic event has affected Liverpool's pre-season training plans, with many players attending funerals in Portugal.

Jota has worn the number 20 shirt since joining the Port City side from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and has quickly become a key part of the Reds' successful journey.

Liverpool will play their first game since the tragedy this weekend, when they take on Preston North End in a pre-season friendly.
