Vancouver fans are eagerly awaiting Thomas Muller. |
Bild reports that the Vancouver Whitecaps are close to winning the race to sign the German striker. The Canadian soccer representative is negotiating personal terms with Muller, with an expected salary of between $2.5 million and $3 million a year, plus bonuses. The deal is expected to be signed this week, before the MLS summer transfer window closes on August 7.
The move also fits into the Vancouver Whitecaps' strategy to increase their appeal to Canadian fans and the German community in the British Columbia region.
Previously, Muller announced on his personal page that he would move to play in the US. "I will move to play in the US, on the other side of the ocean," Muller said in a video posted on his personal channel. "I am still passionate about football, and that is why I decided to continue playing football no matter what happens. So I am trying to make the most of this opportunity - even though I am no longer in Europe and no longer playing in the Champions League."
Muller, who made 565 appearances and scored 144 goals for Bayern, is expected to bring experience and class to the top flight of American football. His decision to move to MLS shows that he is still eager to continue his career in a new environment.
Muller will be the 19th German player to play in MLS. The 2014 World Cup winner is aware that leaving Bayern will be a big change for his family: "This is definitely my first experience abroad. I'm also very curious to experience everything without Bayern anymore."
