Chua Boc Street (Dong Da District), 810 m long, is home to many of Hanoi's top fashion stores. Previously, the stalls were packed with shoppers. In recent days, after the Hanoi People's Committee launched a peak period of counterfeit goods inspection from May 15 to June 15, the atmosphere has become deserted and gloomy. Compared to the Lunar New Year, after only half a year, many stores have closed, and the number of visitors has decreased significantly.

A store on Pham Ngoc Thach Street, with a frontage of more than 10 meters, hung a banner saying "returning the premises, selling at super cheap prices". The inside is currently empty, with a floor area of more than 100 square meters, the rental price is nearly 100 million VND per month.

The two-story store on Nguyen Trai Street (Thanh Xuan District) has many signs saying "clearance, closed" and "house for rent". The neighborhood is usually very crowded in the evenings, especially during holidays and weekends, when many college and university students gather to shop.

A fashion store on Hang Bong Street (Hoan Kiem District) hung a large banner covering nearly half of its facade with the words "clearance sale, return of premises".

More than 5 km away, on the central street of the Old Quarter, near Hoan Kiem Lake, famous for its diverse range of goods from clothes to souvenirs, the situation of being closed is common, even on weekends, which is the busiest time. This area specializes in wholesale to the provinces, and also serves retail tourists .

Mr. Vu Hung, a clothing seller in Hoan Kiem district, said that goods are mainly imported from China or domestic garment factories. "Market management has tightened checks on origin, source, counterfeit goods, so we have to temporarily close to standardize invoices and documents. Previously, most of us only had retail invoices and imported goods online," he said.

Hang Dao Street, which is always crowded, is now in a slump. Many shops are only open a little, with their doors slightly ajar or part of their frontage open.

According to local residents, the number of shops closing has increased significantly since the government launched a peak period of checking for counterfeit goods. In addition, from the beginning of June, individuals with annual revenue of over VND1 billion will have to pay taxes based on actual revenue instead of the previous lump sum.

"I closed last week because taxes are stricter now, and I have to install an app to declare the goods for sale," said a store owner.

On Hang Ngang Street (Hoan Kiem District), many stores only open when customers or shippers arrive to pick up and deliver. The transaction takes place quickly and the shutters are rolled down immediately afterwards.

"They are still doing business, but this time they mainly sell online, so there are days when they close and days when they open. A store with an area of more than one square meter also loses several million VND per month," said a seller on Dao Duy Anh Street. This short street has up to 11 stores closing at the same time.

About 15 km from the center of Hanoi , La Phu commune (Hoai Duc district) is considered the largest "confectionery capital" in the North with many distributors of cheap domestic and imported confectionery. Currently, many stores here are closed or temporarily closed, although there are still a few motorbikes and trucks coming to import goods.
