Life Choices

GD&TĐ - Immediately after knowing the high school graduation exam scores, candidates begin to register their wishes on the Ministry of Education and Training's General Admission Support System.

At this time, besides students who have strategies and know how to arrange their wishes reasonably to increase their chances of being admitted to their favorite major/school, there are still many students who are still confused about which major to choose and which school to attend. Some candidates even said: "I just register, as long as I pass the university entrance exam, I will think about it later."

Applying for university, studying at university... university is not a new story. In fact, the recruitment and career counseling sessions in recent years have shown that many students and parents set the important goal of getting into a university, not choosing a major/career. Therefore, both candidates and parents do not spend much time learning about careers, job trends and related fields, only focusing on investing in studying, aiming to get high scores and get into university.

This situation has led to the consequence that many students enter the lecture hall but do not have the skills to adapt, manage time, solve problems, and work in groups. Some students, after achieving their goal of passing the university entrance exam, cannot determine their next goal, lose direction and motivation to continue trying and pursuing their studies.

Information from universities shows that many students who study at university are unable to get a diploma, and even have to stop studying after 1-2 years. The dropout rate of 10-15%/year at universities is mostly those who do not research their majors clearly and choose randomly when applying for admission. Those who are lucky enough to graduate also find it difficult to pursue their majors.

Research results from a group of experts from the International School, Hanoi National University show that the rate of graduates working in a different field is over 24%. Of which, many bachelor's degrees require over 60% of graduates to work in a different field.

A survey by the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City (previously) showed that about 30% of university graduates intend to work long-term; while 30% want to find another job because it does not match their abilities and aspirations, and 40% have not yet determined their career goals.

Applying for university admission is the first step on the path to career orientation, so candidates need to be very serious and careful in choosing a career. This year, changes in admission are mainly related to the technical stage of admission, so the chance of admission for candidates is not reduced, and passing the university entrance exam is not too difficult.

The important thing is that candidates must determine the industry/career that is suitable for their abilities, interests, family circumstances and the labor market's human resource needs. If they choose a suitable industry/career but their test scores are not high enough to enter university, candidates can boldly apply for lower levels such as college or intermediate level.

According to a report by the Center for Human Resources Demand Forecasting and Labor Market Information of Ho Chi Minh City, in the third quarter of 2024, more than two-thirds (about 64%) of the total number of job seekers had university degrees, but the number of job positions meeting this criterion only accounted for one-fifth (about 20%).

Most businesses only recruit college graduates (23%), intermediate (19%), elementary (24%) and unskilled workers (15%). Vocationaleducation has quite a wide range of job opportunities, and the mechanism for connecting from intermediate and college to university is also open. This is a direction that candidates can consider more, it is not necessary to go to university at all costs and... study at university.
